With 103 votes in favor, 49 votes against and 3 abstentions, the Italian Senate has approved the decree on the construction of a suspension bridge across the Strait of Messina, connecting Sicily with mainland Italy. Thus, the decree, which was approved by the Italian government on March 16, has officially become law.

The dream of a bridge connecting the mainland to Sicily across the Strait of Messina dates back to Roman times. Although various plans have been submitted to the government, the suspension bridge project has come and gone. There is even a popular Italian saying: “I will do it when the bridge to Messina is finished,” according to CNN.

According to initial estimates, the project will take at least 6 years to complete at a cost of around 8.5 billion EUR. Once completed, the Messina Suspension Bridge will be 3,666m long, making it the longest suspension bridge in the world.

Speaking after the decree was passed, Deputy Prime Minister and Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini said that this was a historic decision. The construction of this bridge will also help create about 100,000 jobs over the course of 7 years.

Meanwhile, Senator Nino Germanà assessed that the construction of a bridge across the Strait of Messina connecting Sicily and the mainland could turn southern Italy into the center of Europe in the Mediterranean region.
