(CLO) At least 54 people were killed and 158 others were injured when RSF (Rapid Support Forces) paramilitary forces attacked Sabrein market in Omdurman city, Sudan on February 1.
It was one of the bloodiest attacks yet amid a protracted civil war between the RSF and the Sudanese army for control of the country.
Culture Minister and government spokesman Khalid al Aleisir condemned the attack, saying many of the victims were women and children. He stressed that the act was a “blatant violation of international humanitarian law” and added to the militia’s “bloody record”.

The Sudanese Doctors Association confirmed that a mortar shell had landed close to al Naw Hospital, which has received most of the casualties. The hospital is suffering from a severe shortage of surgeons and nurses, making treatment difficult.
Video footage circulating on social media shows numbered body bags lined up outside the hospital, while injured patients lie on the floor.
Sudan’s civil war began in April 2023, when tensions between the military leadership and the RSF escalated into armed conflict. To date, more than 28,000 people have died, millions have been forced to flee their homes, and many areas are in dire straits of famine. Some families have resorted to eating grass to survive.
Just a week ago, some 70 people were killed when RSF attacked the only functioning hospital in the Darfur town of Al Fashir. Meanwhile, the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced it was investigating war crimes and crimes against humanity in Sudan, while the US accused RSF and allied groups of genocide.
In recent months, the RSF has suffered repeated losses on the battlefield, allowing the Sudanese army to gain the upper hand in the nearly two-year-old war.
