As rocket fire exploded all around, panicked partygoers tried to escape by any means possible.
“We jumped into a car with strangers and tried to get out of the area as soon as possible,” said Zohar Maariv, 23. After the car caught fire, they tried to hide until they were rescued.
As sirens sounded across southern and central Israel early on October 7, people began trying to contact friends and family. Some received confirmation via text message, others saw their loved ones on television.
The figure was reported by several local media outlets, citing health department figures. It is unclear whether the deaths at the festival are included in the total of more than 700 people killed in Israel so far. More than 2,000 others have been reported injured across the country.
Israel's subsequent retaliatory strikes on Gaza killed 413 Palestinians and injured nearly 2,300.
