Less innovation, more controversy

A series of hit-making experts return to Vietnamese music scene at the beginning of the year

Right from the beginning of 2024, the Vietnamese music market has become bustling with the launch of a series of new music products. If in January, MVs with content welcoming the new year "dominated the airwaves", in February and March, products with a variety of content and performance styles were introduced to the public.

On February 6, Duc Phuc "released" the MV Di Chua Cau Duyen - the fourth music product released by the male singer on Valentine's Day, after Hon Ca Yeu (2020), Ngay Dau Dau (2022) and Em Dong Y - I Do (2023). Immediately after that, the famous couple of Vietnamese music BigDaddy & Emily also released a comeback MV called Yeu Nam . At the end of the month, Jack introduced to the public the MV Thien Ly Oi. In this product, he filmed   return to his musical forte, which is lyrical music with a touch of folk music, instead of the breakthrough in From Where I Born before.

March brought the return of a series of big names when Son Tung M-TP released the MV "We of the Future" . This is a follow-up product to the MV " We of the Present" - the male singer's "hit" in 2020. Meanwhile, Den Vau - the most popular rapper at the moment also announced the MV "Music of the Forest" , the song released on March 4. This is a work carrying a message about nature, about the harmony between humans and the mountains and forests.

Previously, on the evening of March 1, Vu Cat Tuong released the MV "Tung la", a pop genre mixed with bossa nova, increasing the relaxation and lightness for listeners. Bich Phuong returned to the music "race" after 2 years of absence with a product called "Nang chau tieu sau", released on March 8.

Another notable face also returning to the music scene at the beginning of the year is Suboi with Dau thien ha . This is a new song that deals with the story of women who become daughters-in-law, having to shoulder too many tasks, too much pressure on their shoulders, at the same time they still "have to be beautiful, talented, graceful", gentle and please everyone.

Less creativity, more controversy

As soon as it was released, Son Tung M-TP's MV "We of the Future " won the Top 1 Trending position on the YouTube chart. This is not a surprising achievement due to his large fan base, however, if considered in a broader community, the song did not leave much of an impression.

According to the revelations, the work was composed by Son Tung M-TP 5 years ago, generally has a beautiful melody but lacks highlights. Compared to the "hits" that created an explosion of the Thai Binh singer many years ago, the notable thing about this product is perhaps Son Tung's media strategy, when his rumored lover Hai Tu suddenly unfollowed his account on social networks, then both of them took turns posting information about the new product. Instead of discussing the quality of the music, many people consider this a move to make Son Tung's love affair public, after many years of complete silence in front of the audience.

Meanwhile, returning after 2 years, Bich Phuong disappointed with Raising the Cup of Sorrow . The song composed by Tang Duy Tan is not much different from his previous "hit" - Cutting the Sorrow in both rhythm and lyric development. Going to the Temple to Pray for Love by Duc Phuc also did not show any appeal, and because of that, the song is much less "hot" than his previous "hits" in previous Valentine seasons.

Among the new faces, Quang Hung MasterD is the luckiest case when his MV Thuy Tieu was well received by listeners because of its catchy melody, easy-to-listen-to lyrics, and easy-to-remember content. The product also helped him reach a large Vietnamese audience, after many years of only being loved by listeners in Thailand.

While not gaining much professional points, the MVs at the beginning of the year have in common that they all cause controversy, mostly related to personal life. Similar to Son Tung M-TP's "We of the Future" , Bich Phuong also attracted attention due to rumors of a relationship with Tang Duy Tan, who composed the song for her. Meanwhile, Cat Tuong hinted at a love affair with the female backup dancer in the song "Used to Be", she released affectionate photos but did not confirm the dating rumors between the two.

On the other hand, Jack's MV "Thien Ly Oi" is embroiled in copyright controversy, as musician/streamer ViruSs claimed that the beat of this song was co-produced by him and Jack. According to this person, the male singer reused the common music without permission. "I'm surprised because if Jack brought this demo to remix, you would have told me but you didn't say anything. This song (Thien Ly Oi - PV) is similar to my demo. I'm very shocked," streamer ViruSs said indignantly.

In response to ViruSs's "accusation", Jack said that the male streamer was using his name to attract views. At the same time, the male singer denied the accusation of using the beat without permission, expressing his desire to work directly with this streamer.

The arrival of dozens of MVs at the beginning of the year shows that competition in the Vietnamese music industry is increasingly fierce. This also poses a challenge for artists to constantly innovate and renew themselves in music.
