According to a statement on October 25 from the US Central Command (CENTCOM), F-16 aircraft from the US Air Force's 480th Fighter Squadron stationed at Spangdahlem base, Germany, have arrived in CENTCOM's area of responsibility.
CENTCOM stressed that the mission of these F-16s is to enhance the US presence in the region, but did not specify the F-16s' intended operational role.
The move comes amid escalating tensions in the Middle East. Israel is said to be preparing to respond to Iran's firing of 200 missiles at the country on October 1.
In addition, Israel's military campaign against Hezbollah in Lebanon has also raised concerns about the risk of a full-scale war spreading across the region.
Last month, the Pentagon said it would send more fighter jets to the Middle East, beef up air defenses and deploy more troops amid the potential escalation between Israel and Iran. The force includes F-16, F-15E and F-22 fighter jets, as well as A-10 attack aircraft and associated personnel.
