Israel announced that it was about to launch a large-scale attack on Hamas, many high-ranking members of the Islamic movement were killed.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) announced that thousands of Israeli soldiers are preparing to participate in military operations in the Gaza Strip to increase the intensity of the ground attack on Hamas.

The 36th Division, which previously participated in the ground offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon, is being redeployed to the Southern Command and is beginning to prepare for military operations in the Gaza Strip, the Times of Israel news agency reported on March 23.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir is pushing for a new expansion of the army's offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Zamir said that the IDF's current operations have caused harm to Hamas but have not yet resulted in the release of hostages, so the IDF needs to increase pressure in Gaza.

Meanwhile, according to AFP , on the same day, March 23, Hamas confirmed that a senior member of the movement's political wing, Salah al-Bardawil, was killed in an Israeli airstrike in southern Gaza. This is the third member of Hamas' political wing to be killed since Israel resumed airstrikes on the Gaza Strip on March 18, following Yasser Harb and Issam Da'alis, head of the Hamas-established government.

The Israeli military confirmed that it had targeted Bardawil, accusing him of directing Hamas' strategic and military planning in the Gaza Strip. Bardawil joined Hamas when it was founded in 1987, serving as its spokesman before being elected to the Hamas political wing in 2021. According to the Israeli military, Bardawil's removal further weakened Hamas' military and governance capabilities.

In a related development, Israeli Defense Minister Katz confirmed that the country's military killed senior Hamas official Ismail Barhoum in an attack on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis on March 23. Mr. Katz said that Barhoum replaced Issam Da'alis as leader of the Hamas government in Gaza.

Hamas has not commented on the damage. However, on the same day, spokesman Taher al-Nunu said the group is considering new proposals from intermediaries to revive the ceasefire, including a "connection" proposal from US special envoy Steve Witkoff.
