Israel launches surprise attack on Lebanese capital

Reuters quoted a security source as saying that among the dead were eight members of a family that had evacuated from southern Lebanon.

Israel did not issue an evacuation warning before the attack on Friday night and has not previously attacked the area, which is outside Beirut's southern suburbs, where Hezbollah's headquarters have been repeatedly bombed by Israel, Reuters reported. Israeli media reported that senior Hezbollah member Wafiq Safa was targeted in the overnight air strike on central Beirut. However, a Hezbollah source said Safa survived the attack.

Separately, a UN source accused Israeli forces of firing on a UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL) observation post at its main base in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, injuring two people, Reuters reported. UNIFIL had earlier accused Israeli tanks of firing on a watchtower at its headquarters in southern Lebanon on October 10, injuring two members. Israel admitted firing in the area, saying Hezbollah members were operating near UN positions, AFP reported.

Italy, which contributes a large number of troops to UNIFIL, condemned Israel's new action as "possibly constituting a war crime", while the US said it was deeply concerned.
