According to AFP , this is the first attack since a ceasefire last November between Israel and the Hezbollah movement in Lebanon, which ended most of the fighting between the two sides.
"Israeli warplanes attacked the Hadath neighborhood in Beirut's southern suburbs," a densely populated area with many residential buildings and schools, after Israel was hit by rocket fire from Lebanon on the same day, Lebanon's national news agency said.
The southern suburbs of Beirut, a stronghold of Hezbollah, were targeted by Israeli forces before the ceasefire was reached. Israel said the attack was in response to rocket fire, but Hezbollah continued to deny it was behind the incident.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam contacted the army chief "and requested swift action to conduct the necessary investigations to uncover those behind the irresponsible rocket fire, which threatens the stability and security of Lebanon", and called for "intensified efforts" to arrest the perpetrators.
He also condemned Israel's airstrikes on southern Beirut as a "dangerous escalation".
On the same day, after meeting with his Lebanese counterpart Joseph Aoun, French President Emmanuel Macron also condemned the Israeli airstrike as an "unacceptable" act and a violation of the ceasefire. Mr. Macron stressed the importance of adhering to the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah.
The French leader also said he would discuss the development with US President Donald Trump "in the coming hours" and with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu within the next two days.
