The Israel National Cyber Security Department (INCD) announced on November 24 that it has detected an increasing trend in the scope and sophistication of phishing messages originating from Iran targeting Israel.
The announcement said that there had been an increasing number of attempts to recruit Israeli spies and to infiltrate Israeli agencies and organizations originating from Iran.
It could be an attractive job offer at a prestigious Israeli technology corporation appearing on LinkedIn with a fake link, or an email with a link from the authorities asking for a security update, or an invitation to “fill in the form and receive a gift”.
INCD has identified a clear trend of these scams originating from Iranian hacker groups.
“Iranian plots have become more sophisticated, more focused, and more tailored to the interests of their targets,” said Tom Alexandrovitch, director of the Defense Technology Directorate.
In particular, the number of attacks has increased sharply since the conflict broke out.
According to the agency, at least 15 campaigns originating from Iranian hacker groups have been detected in the past few months. The attacks have targeted thousands of email addresses belonging to public and private organizations and businesses in Israel, among other attacks. The goal is to sabotage systems, steal information or cause psychological instability.
Among the hacker groups are notorious organizations such as “BlackShadow” and “MuddyWater”, which are believed to be linked to the Iranian government.
INCD said it is working to stop the attack chain by blocking links, providing guidance to at-risk organizations, and issuing warnings to the public.
Iran has yet to respond to this report .
On the same day, the Office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on November 24 issued a statement condemning the murder of an Israeli citizen in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), calling it a "brutal act of anti-Semitic terrorism."
The move came after the body of Zvi Kogan, a rabbi working for the Chabad Orthodox Jewish movement in the UAE who had been missing since November 21, was found.
The statement quoted Prime Minister Netanyahu as emphasizing: “The State of Israel will use all possible means to bring the criminals responsible for the death of Mr. Zvi Kogan to justice.”
The Israeli government reiterated its advice to its citizens to avoid unnecessary travel to the UAE and that those already in the UAE should limit their movements and stay in safe areas.
Meanwhile, the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not commented on the incident.
