The Omani Foreign Ministry announced that, through its mediation, Belgium and Iran had reached an agreement to release individuals detained by both sides.
According to Al Jazeera, a statement from the Omani Foreign Ministry said that, under the agreement reached, Iran released a Belgian aid worker, while Brussels returned a diplomat to Tehran. The prisoner exchange took place in Muscat, Oman, on May 26.
The Belgian aid worker was arrested by Iranian authorities upon his arrival in February last year and was later sentenced to 40 years in prison on 74 espionage charges. The incident came just months after Belgium sentenced an Iranian diplomat to 20 years in prison for his involvement in a bomb plot in France.
