On October 16, spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) announced that the country is ready to engage in "serious negotiations" with the US and Europe to restore the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the 2015 nuclear deal.
According to ISNA news agency, under the 2015 nuclear deal with the US, China, Russia, France, Germany and the UK, Iran pledged to scale back its nuclear research activities in exchange for the easing of sanctions.
Tehran abandoned some of its commitments after Washington unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA and reimposed sanctions on Iran in 2018, causing the deal to collapse.
In 2021, Iran allowed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to replace a camera system at a nuclear facility in the city of Karaj, but insisted it would not share surveillance videos with the IAEA until the US lifted sanctions.
Regarding the risk of Israel retaliating for the large-scale attack that Iran carried out earlier this month, on October 17, Commander of the Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Hossein Salami warned of a response from Israel if it attacks Tehran's targets anywhere in the region.
Speaking at the funeral of an IRGC general killed along with Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon last month, Salami said: “If you make a mistake… we will respond with a strong response.”
However, Iran has downplayed the possibility of Israel attacking the Islamic Republic’s nuclear facilities. AEOI spokesman Kamalvandi said: “It is very unlikely that nuclear facilities will be attacked. If this happens, the damage will be minimal.”
