Middle East-Africa
* Iran launched about 180 missiles at Israel on the evening of October 1, but they were intercepted by the country's air defense systems and the support of US and French armed forces in the Middle East. The US and Israel declared Iran's attack a failure.
Meanwhile, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces Mohammad Bagheri said that the country had attacked two Israeli Air Force bases and the headquarters of the country's Mossad intelligence agency.
On the morning of October 2, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi affirmed that his country had exercised its “right to self-defense” and that its actions had ended. If “Israel provokes further retaliation,” Tehran’s response “will be stronger and more decisive.” Mr. Araqchi also asked Washington not to intervene after the attack.
Iran's foreign minister also exchanged views on the attack with his British, French and Dutch counterparts by phone, stressing the Islamic Republic's "months-long restraint" in the face of Israel's aggression in the region. (THX, AFP)
* Israel has vowed to retaliate against Iran's missile attack at a time and place of its own choosing. The Wall Street Journal quoted Arab officials as saying that Israel threatened to attack Iran's nuclear and oil infrastructure.
Despite Iran's latest missile attack, the Israeli military said on the night of October 1 that its air force would continue to strike hard across the Middle East "as it has done throughout the past year."
* The Houthis launched a Quds 5 rocket at a military position deep inside Israel on October 2, according to the Houthi military spokesman in Yemen, Yahya Saree. There was no immediate statement from the Israeli military about the incident. (Reuters)
* France has sent more troops to the Middle East and asked the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) to meet on October 2 after Iran launched a missile attack on Israel. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot has also been sent to the Middle East to promote diplomatic efforts to ease tensions. (AFP)
* International efforts call for restraint after Iran attacks Israel: The Kremlin expressed concern that the situation in the Middle East is developing according to the "most alarming scenario".
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz warned that Iran risks fanning the flames of conflict across the region, while the European Union (EU) warned of a dangerous cycle of attacks and "the need for an immediate ceasefire across the region".
India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has reiterated its call for restraint and protection of civilians, warning that the conflict risks spreading. (AFP)
* Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian visited Qatar on October 2, a day after Tehran launched missiles at Israel. (Reuters)
Asia-Pacific
* Japan has not pursued a proposal to create an “Asian NATO” (Asian version of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization), Defense Minister Nakatani Gen said on October 2, noting that new Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru has not asked the ministry to pursue the initiative. (Kyodo)
* Japan's new prime minister held a phone conversation with US President Barack Obama on October 2, during which Mr. Ishiba expressed his desire to strengthen the bilateral alliance. The two sides also discussed the risk of all-out war in the Middle East, trilateral cooperation with South Korea and the vision for the Indo-Pacific. (Kyodo)
* South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and new Japanese Prime Minister Ishiba Shigeru held a phone conversation on October 2 to discuss bilateral relations, in which the two sides agreed to make joint efforts to strengthen both bilateral cooperation and trilateral cooperation with the United States to resolve issues related to North Korea. * The China Coast Guard (CCG) ship Meishan entered the Arctic for the first time on October 1 - the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and also the 75th anniversary of the establishment of China-Russia diplomatic relations. (Reuters)

* Ukraine has withdrawn its troops from the hill town of Vuhledar in the east after two years of fierce fighting to defend the strategic area. The Eastern Military Command of Ukraine announced that the purpose of the withdrawal was to "preserve forces and equipment".

* French Prime Minister Michel Barnier outlined his national priorities including deficit reduction, immigration and pension reform in an hour-and-a-half-long speech to the National Assembly on October 1. Notably, he called France's huge public debt the biggest danger the country is facing. (AFP)

* The plane carrying Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva circled in the air and was unable to land due to technical problems after leaving Mexico City on October 1.
* Mexico's first female president, Claudia Sheinbaum, was sworn in as president. She is also the first female head of state in North America.
