AFP. After seven years of closure, Iran will reopen its embassy in the Saudi Arabian capital Riyadh today, June 6, with the presence of the newly appointed Iranian ambassador, Mr. Alireza Enayati.
Diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia were disrupted in 2016, after Iranian protesters attacked the headquarters of Saudi Arabia's diplomatic missions in the country, related to Riyadh's execution of Shi'ite Muslim cleric Nimr al-Nimr. (Source: AFP) |
MANILA TIMES. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has appointed Gilberto Teodoro , a former congressman who served as Defense Secretary under former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, as his new defense secretary.
ANTARA. Hundreds of doctors and nurses in Indonesia have called on lawmakers to stop discussing amendments to the Health Care Law, saying the amendments could affect the rights and benefits of those working in the medical profession.
TEMPO. The 4th Multilateral Naval Exercise Komodo (MNEK) with the theme “Cooperation to Recover and Emerge Stronger” officially opened in Makassar city, South Sulawesi province, Indonesia.
THE STAR. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission is considering imposing some restrictions on the Telegram app to prevent criminal activities, protect national security and ensure user safety.
KYODO. The Japanese government is expected to soon announce a goal of making the country a hub of the global supply chain for strategic, critical goods such as semiconductors.
KOREA TIMES. From December 2023, foreign investors will be allowed to buy stocks and bonds in Korea without prior registration, under a policy aimed at creating more opportunities to attract foreign investors.
XINHUA. The training ship Qi Jiguang (number 83) of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy docked at Muara port, starting a visit to Brunei from June 5-7.
DAWN. Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has stressed the urgent need to combat plastic pollution, in line with the theme “Solutions to Plastic Pollution” launched by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).
REUTERS. Aircraft manufacturer Airbus is closing in on a deal to sell a record number of planes, up to nearly 500, to IndiGo - India's largest airline.
MINT . India and the US have signed a roadmap for defence industrial cooperation over the next few years, a move that is expected to boost the Asian power's defence manufacturing ambitions.

REUTERS. Russia is ready for dialogue with the United States on arms control and Moscow is waiting for specific proposals from Washington through diplomatic channels, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.
TASS. About 40 warships, more than 3,500 soldiers, 25 planes and helicopters and 500 pieces of military equipment of the Baltic Fleet (Russia) participated in naval and land exercises in the Kaliningrad region from June 5-25.
GREEK CITY NEWS. Greece says it will rescue dozens of migrants stranded for days in the Evros River area that separates the country from Turkey.
AFP. The World Health Organization (WHO) will use the EU's digital Covid card as the basis for a global health certification system, under a new partnership agreement reached on June 5.
DEFENCE24. Poland will receive the first batch of South Korean K239 Chunmoo missile launchers with a range of 300 km next August, according to Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Mariusz Blaszczak.
BBC. British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has confirmed that his plan to stop illegal immigration has been effective, helping to reduce the number of people crossing the English Channel in small boats to reach the UK by about 20% since the beginning of the year.
AFP. Most of Ukraine's winter cereal crops are currently in good condition, but yields could fall by up to 20 percent if the hot, dry weather persists.
ANADOULU. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said an agreement on Sweden's accession to the organization could be reached before the NATO summit in Lithuania in July.

REUTERS. Latin America and Europe should work to reduce " overdependence " on third countries, according to a European Commission statement to be presented on June 7.
TELE SUR. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has arrived in Saudi Arabia, starting an official visit to the country. This is President Maduro's third visit to Saudi Arabia as head of state.
