Iran's state news agency IRNA quoted a statement from the country's Foreign Ministry saying that Mr. Bagheri Kani's statement was made during an open debate of the UN Security Council in New York City, USA, on the issue of Palestine and multilateralism.
Iran's acting foreign minister stressed that the administration of President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian will focus on opening new horizons of cooperation and expanding friendly relations with other governments "based on dialogue, cooperation, equality and mutual respect."
In addition, the Islamic Republic supports initiatives that promote multilateralism, respect for international law and the goals of the UN Charter.
Describing multilateralism as key to addressing global threats and challenges, Mr. Kani criticized unilateral sanctions, calling them “extreme and inhumane” manifestations of unilateralism.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Mr. Kani also met with President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Dennis Francis, during which Mr. Francis stressed the need to make efforts to combat unilateralism.
The UNGA President also praised Iran's constructive role in the Middle East, especially in establishing stability and security through expanding relations with regional and neighboring countries.
For his part, the Iranian acting foreign minister expressed concern about the situation in Palestine, and appreciated the role of the UNGA and Mr. Francis in adopting resolutions and adopting constructive measures to support Palestine.
Highlighting the need to intensify effective efforts to prevent the conflict situation in the Gaza Strip, Mr. Baqeri also expressed his appreciation for the UNGA's efforts in confronting unilateral coercive measures.
Mr. Bagheri Kani led an Iranian delegation that left the capital Tehran and arrived in New York on July 15 to attend UN Security Council meetings focusing on the escalating situation in the Middle East.
