On June 1, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian said that his country will complete the procedures to become a permanent member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in early July.

In an interview with IRIB news agency, Mr. Amir-Abdollahian said that after being approved by the Kyrgyzstan Parliament, all founding members of the SCO "gave the green light" for Iran to become an official member of this organization.
The Iranian president is expected to attend the summit of the Council of Heads of States of the SCO on July 4 and the review of the country's membership will also be completed at the same time.
"We will become a full member of the SCO in July, when the bloc's summit takes place," the Iranian diplomat said.
In September 2021, the 21st Conference of the Council of Heads of States of the SCO in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, announced the decision to launch the process of admitting Iran to the organization.
In November 2022, the Iranian Parliament passed a law on Iran's membership in the SCO with an overwhelming majority.
The SCO, founded in 2001, is an influential economic and security bloc and has emerged as one of the largest trans-regional international organizations.
Currently, the SCO's official members are Russia, China, the Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, India and Pakistan.
Observer countries are Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran and Mongolia, dialogue partners are Azerbaijan, Armenia, Cambodia, Nepal, Türkiye and Sri Lanka.
