(Dan Tri) - Iran has affirmed that it will retaliate if the US and its ally Israel attack Tehran's nuclear facilities.
Iran has warned that it will respond immediately and decisively if its nuclear facilities are attacked, which could lead to an "all-out war in the region", Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said in an interview with Al Jazeera on January 31.
Mr Araqchi said that Israel and the US launching a military attack on Iran's nuclear facilities would be "one of the biggest historical mistakes the US could make".
Concerns are growing among Iran's top leadership that a second term for US President Donald Trump could give Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu more power to attack Iran's nuclear facilities, while also tightening US sanctions on Tehran's oil industry.
These concerns, coupled with the economic situation, could push Tehran toward negotiations with the Trump administration over the future of its nuclear program.
Regarding Mr. Trump's re-election, Mr. Araghchi said the history of Iran-US relations is "filled with hostility and suspicion."
He pointed out that the US under the Trump administration in its first term withdrew from the nuclear deal and assassinated Qassem Soleimani, head of the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Mr Araqchi suggested that the US could release frozen Iranian funds as a first step to building trust between the two warring nations.
"Iran's assets and funds have been frozen by the US in many places and they have not fulfilled their previous commitments to release these funds. These things can absolutely be done by the US government to build trust between us," Mr. Araqchi said.
In 2018, President Trump, in his first term, withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and a group of world powers, and reimposed harsh US sanctions as part of a "maximum pressure" policy on Iran.
In response, Tehran has taken steps to stop complying with the deal, including accelerating uranium enrichment.
Mr Trump has pledged to return to the policy he pursued during his previous term, of using economic pressure to force Iran to negotiate over its nuclear programme, ballistic missile programme and activities in the Middle East.
