iPhone 15 Pro Max performance increased by 25% when upgrading to iOS 18

Although Apple has just released the beta version of iOS 18, the operating system has shown its power on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max when some developers noticed that the neural engine (NPU) of the iPhone 15 Pro Max is 25% faster than before.

This is believed to stem from the fact that the current iOS 17 operating system cannot fully utilize the NPU power on the A17 Pro chip installed on the iPhone 15 Pro series, and the A17 Pro chip cannot be trained before the launch of iOS 18. Currently, the A17 Pro chip is really useful in performing machine learning (ML) or Apple Intelligence tasks.

The account @lafaiel shared on X that after updating to iOS 18, the iPhone 15 Pro Max's ML score on the Geekbench platform has improved significantly. The image posted by @lafaiel shows that when the iPhone 15 Pro Max was running iOS 17.4, its Geekbench score was 6,249 points, but after updating to iOS 18, the score jumped straight to 7,816, higher than the current level. This is equivalent to an improvement of more than 25%.

Why is iOS 18 able to unleash the potential of the A17 Pro chip? Sources say that such performance growth may be related to the new Core ML type of ML Tensor, which allows the use of familiar APIs to calculate multi-dimensional arrays.

Apple's next-generation iPhone 16 Pro is expected to be powered by the A18 Pro chip. The new chip will bring further improvements, including a more powerful neural engine. iOS 18 is still in beta at the moment, and future betas will likely bring additional performance improvements.
