The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) announced that the national team will not play at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in the two home matches of the 2024 AFF Cup (ASEAN Cup) group stage. The stadium with a capacity of 80,000 spectators in Jakarta is Indonesia's national stadium.
Instead, coach Shin Tae-yong and his team had to move to Manahan Stadium, in Central Java province, more than 500 km away. This stadium has a capacity of only 20,000 spectators, 25% of the "fire pot" Gelora Bung Karno.
“The reason is the number of fans. When the Indonesian team plays Laos and the Philippines, the fans will not fill the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium,” explained Mr. Sumardji, head of the Indonesian team. Only when the Indonesian team passes the group stage will they use the national stadium. The AFF Cup semi-finals and finals naturally have greater appeal.
The Indonesian team abandoned the 80,000-seat stadium to move to a 20,000-seat stadium.
Indonesia is not the only team that will not use its national stadium in the AFF Cup 2024. The Vietnamese team will play at Viet Tri Stadium (Phu Tho) instead of My Dinh Stadium ( Hanoi ). Cambodia will choose Olympic Stadium (Phnom Penh). The Timor Leste team will use Hang Day Stadium (Hanoi) as their home stadium.
The Indonesian team will not use its strongest squad at the 2024 AFF Cup (ASEAN Cup). According to the new list announced yesterday (November 25), coach Shin Tae-yong only called up 2 players over 21 years old, Asnawi Mangkualam (25 years old) and Pratama Arhan (22 years old). Of the remaining players, 23 have never been called up to the Indonesian team.
When asked about his team's goals at the 2024 AFF Cup, Indonesian Football Federation President Erick Thohir only said he wanted to achieve "the best result, no matter what." However, CNN Indonesia reported that coach Shin Tae-yong was instructed to take his team to the final.
