In Central Java (Indonesia), the number of tourists visiting the Borobudur Buddhist temple is 1.4 million people annually, of which foreign tourists contribute 10% of this number. With the goal of developing Borobudur into a cultural and spiritual tourism destination, Indonesia expects the number of tourists to increase 3-4 times, especially Buddhist followers in Southeast Asian countries.
Indonesia’s State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Minister Erick Thohir said Borobudur is a world heritage site that must be managed with a clear vision and strong commitment. The development is not only for tourism purposes but also to create economic impact for the community, especially small and medium enterprises.
The increase in tourists to Borobudur has brought about improvements in local businesses and increased competitiveness in the creative economy sector. This is a result of efforts to create a comprehensive economic ecosystem, according to Minister Erick Thohir. The development of the Borobudur area also includes the transformation of museums into educational and cultural centers.
The development and conservation of the Borobudur ecosystem also includes a 60.89-hectare Heritage Park. Borobudur has several clusters such as the Borobudur Spiritual Temple (BSS) and the Botanical Park & Arboretum, which combine spiritual, educational and cultural tourism. The Indonesian government continues to improve accessibility for international tourists by opening direct flights to Yogyakarta.
