After 12 years of training, there were times when she was discouraged and wanted to give up, but thanks to the encouragement of her teachers, Huynh Thi My Tien overcame everything to reach the highest position at the SEA Games arena.

Competition day 10/5 continued to be a golden day for the Vietnamese Sports Delegation at the 32nd SEA Games, when our athletes brought home 11 more gold medals. These valuable gold medals helped the Vietnamese Sports Delegation rise to the top of the medal tally.

In addition to the impressive gold medals in golf or the dramatic Pencak Silat, in athletics, Vietnamese athletes continue to make a strong impression, especially the case of Huynh Thi My Tien in the women's 100m hurdles.

In this event, Huynh Thi My Tien's biggest rival was fellow countryman Bui Thi Nguyen. In fact, our two athletes were neck and neck right from the starting line. However, thanks to an impressive sprint, Huynh Thi My Tien finished first with a time of 13.50 seconds, just 0.02 seconds faster than Bui Thi Nguyen.

Immediately after finishing, Huynh Thi My Tien was shocked by her own achievement and the athlete born in 1999 burst into tears. Sharing with the media, Huynh Thi My Tien said: “I am very happy to win the gold medal at the 32nd SEA Games, because in the previous two times I participated, I did not have good results. My goal when participating in the SEA Games this year was to strive to win a medal, any color, but in the end, I won the gold medal. My emotions were overwhelming after knowing that I came in first place.”

Huynh Thi My Tien won the gold medal by only 0.02 seconds over the second place winner.

In the women's 100m hurdles, Huynh Thi My Tien not only won over her opponents but also over herself. Because, before the tournament took place, Tien had contracted Covid-19, but she still tried and made a lot of effort to have wind-breaking runs and reached the top of Southeast Asia in her distance.

12 years searching for the "golden smile" at the SEA Games

Before the 32nd SEA Games, Huynh Thi My Tien's achievements in the regional arena were a round zero. At the Games in Vietnam, the athlete born in 1999 finished near last with a truly disappointing result.

However, Huynh Thi My Tien was not discouraged but used that as motivation. The girl from Vinh Long shared: “I often got injured, sometimes felt tired and wanted to give up, but thanks to the encouragement of my teachers, I continued to stick with athletics.”

Huynh Thi My Tien is not from a family of athletes, as her father and mother worked as train drivers. The opportunity that brought Huynh Thi My Tien to athletics was also surprising, when in 6th grade, Tien was asked by her teacher to run a lap to test her ability. After that test, Huynh Thi My Tien practiced and competed in Vinh Long province, and then fell in love with and stuck with athletics until now.

Having trained in athletics since the age of 12, the athlete from Vinh Long has always been elusive for success. After two empty SEA Games, it was not until May 10, 2023, after 12 years of training, that Tien finally reached the top of the region.

High performance sports are always very fierce and the elimination is very high, many injuries will also force athletes to make turning point decisions. Many people will give up to study, worry about the future, career, but Huynh Thi My Tien continues to persevere, pursue her passion and reap sweet rewards.

Huynh Thi My Tien's victory in the women's 100m hurdles at the 32nd SEA Games was only 0.02 seconds ahead of the runner-up. It was not as convincing as Nguyen Thi Oanh's 2 gold medals in just 30 minutes on the competition day of May 9, but the value was no less.

While Nguyen Thi Oanh overcame difficulties and illness to become “undefeated” in the 1,500m, 3,000m steeplechase and 5,000m events at the SEA Games, Huynh Thi My Tien, with her perseverance, endurance and strong will, overcame injuries, defeated her opponents and herself to achieve glory. Therefore, Huynh Thi My Tien’s 12-year journey to achieve the “golden smile” at the SEA Games is truly admirable./.
