“Leverage” of high-tech agriculture

The land, climate and rivers in Phu Giao district are very favorable for agricultural development. The whole district currently has 704 households and high-tech agricultural production facilities; livestock farming is also strongly developed with 157 farms, mainly applying the closed cold model. Many large enterprises such as U&I Agricultural Joint Stock Company (Unifarm), Anova Agri, Vinamit have chosen Phu Giao as the place to invest in high-tech agricultural zones (NNCNC) with a scale of hundreds of hectares. Typically, Unifarm Agricultural Zone in An Thai commune has an area of over 400 hectares, specializing in growing fruit trees using Israeli technology. In Phuoc Sang commune, 2 production zones of Anova and Vinamit have successfully applied the organic model, circular economy to supply clean food to consumers.

After more than 12 years of operation, Unifarm has covered the entire area of An Thai NNCNC area with crops of high economic value, stable consumption market and the ability to be replicated for farmers. Specifically, the model of growing melons in Israeli greenhouses, automatically controlled by computers, according to GlobalGAP standards, brings in revenue of more than 2 billion VND/ha/year; the model of growing bananas for export brings in revenue of 500 million VND/ha/year. According to Unifarm's leaders, the company determines that investing in agriculture is not to compete or replace the role of farmers, but to cooperate so that farmers can produce like Unifarm, and at the same time can effectively exploit Unifarm's market and supply chain platforms. From the company's technology transfer, many companies, farms and households have risen to become prestigious units in the industry.

Mr. To Van Dat, Chairman of Phu Giao District People's Committee, said that in addition to investing in automatic irrigation systems or greenhouses, agricultural models in the district are actively applying sensors, data analysis software and early warning systems for epidemics. Thanks to that, farmers can adjust farming activities in a timely manner, reduce input costs and improve production efficiency. The whole district currently has 107 agricultural production facilities meeting VietGAP standards. This is an important stepping stone to help Phu Giao district's agricultural products easily access modern distribution channels and export markets. "The models of developing NNCNC in Phu Giao district also aim to protect the environment. Farmers use organic fertilizers and pesticides to replace chemical products; at the same time, apply techniques to reuse and recycle waste and wastewater in the production process. This not only helps improve product quality but also contributes to protecting the environment," said Mr. To Van Dat.

Towards ecotourism

Currently, visiting NNCNC farms is one of the typical tourist activities of Phu Giao district. Typically, An Thai NNCNC area, visitors can both visit and learn experiences in the field of fruit growing, especially the model of growing organic melons and bananas and creating jobs for local workers. Chien Thang Citafarm (Tam Lap commune) is also an ideal place for young people to experience the type of visiting fruit gardens with all kinds of typical fruits of the province. Coming here, people can experience the exciting feeling of recreational fishing, exploring the primeval forest with an area of over 10 hectares.

According to the leaders of Phu Giao district, the locality is gradually shaping a new direction for the industry, which is to combine modern agricultural production with the development of experiential tourism. This is considered a sustainable development model, both increasing the value of agricultural products and creating additional revenue from tourism services. However, currently, NNCNC products in the district have not yet become typical souvenir products for tourists. Many farms still have difficulty receiving visitors due to strict requirements on production processes and technology security. Some other potential tourist destinations such as Rat stream (An Binh commune), Tiger Cave tourist area (Tam Lap commune) have not operated stably, even stopped operating due to few visitors or the impact of mineral exploitation. One of the biggest obstacles preventing local tourism from developing is the lack of long-term planning and orientation. Therefore, most destinations are still spontaneous, small-scale, without package tourism products or clear statistics on the number of visitors and revenue. Meanwhile, the locality does not have a team of tour guides...

In order to solve the above limitations and current challenges, Phu Giao district is building a systematic strategy for developing ecological agricultural tourism, in conjunction with major programs of the Central and the province...

Ms. Tran Hong Dung, Vice Chairman of Phu Giao District People's Committee: Phu Giao has many advantages and potentials to develop a high-tech agricultural tourism model. With a system of modern agricultural production farms, diverse agricultural products, along with diverse and rich ecological landscapes and local cultural identities, Phu Giao district has all the conditions to develop high-tech agricultural tourism associated with new rural construction in the direction of smart villages. The province has also issued policies to promote digital transformation in agriculture, encouraging production models combined with tourism, especially in the northern districts, including Phu Giao. This is a great driving force for the locality to restructure the agricultural sector, increase product value, increase competitiveness and develop the economy in a green and sustainable direction.
