Developing large-scale, concentrated livestock farms not only helps farmers proactively prevent and control diseases and ensure environmental hygiene, but also improves economic efficiency. However, up to now, the development of large-scale, concentrated livestock farms still faces many difficulties, especially in Gio Linh district.

In the agricultural economic structure of Gio Linh district, the livestock sector accounts for more than 25%. However, in recent times, the livestock sector has not developed in line with its potential and advantages, mainly in the direction of small-scale and fragmented livestock farming. The whole district has only 101 livestock farms, of which 84 are small-scale and 17 are medium-scale. There are very few livestock households with the number of livestock meeting the farm scale.
Mr. Le Thien Vuong's chicken farm in Ha Thuong village, Gio Chau commune, Gio Linh district is one of the large-scale farming models today. In 2019, Mr. Vuong invested about 350 million VND to build a chicken farm on his family's rubber plantation, in association with Golden Star Animal Feed Company Limited.
Initially, he raised about 4,000 chickens per batch. Now, his chicken farm regularly maintains 7,000 chickens per batch, 3 batches per year. Mr. Vuong shared: “To participate in the livestock association, the farm owner only needs to invest in facilities, barn systems, and standard care, while the company will provide everything from breeds, feed sources to technology transfer, care materials, and disease prevention. The livestock association model has many advantages, but to expand the scale, land is required, while this is a difficult problem for many livestock households today.”
Gio Chau Commune currently has 2 broiler farming models in association with Golden Star Animal Feed Company Limited, with economic efficiency 1.5 times higher than conventional farming models.
According to Chairman of Gio Chau Commune People's Committee Ho Van Thanh, the biggest difficulty at present is that the commune has not yet arranged land funds to build concentrated livestock development areas. Relatively large-scale livestock households in the commune are taking advantage of agricultural land and perennial crop land to develop farms, which is not in accordance with the provisions of the law, but in the current difficult situation, it is necessary to guide people to develop the economy on the basis of complying with regulations on ensuring environmental hygiene.
In recent years, Gio Linh district has focused on developing livestock farming towards improving the quality of herds, combining industrial farming with traditional farming, actively improving the size of the cattle herd towards zebu-ization. According to statistics, in 2023, the total buffalo herd was 2,750, the cow herd was 7,825, the pig herd was 27,599, and the poultry herd was 426,400. The zebu-ization program of the cattle herd continues to be implemented, the total number of breeding cows in the district to date is 1,636, of which 631 were bred with zebu cattle, and 1,005 were bred with beef cattle (3B, Brahman).
However, the district has not yet planned land funds for concentrated livestock development, affecting the development of livestock development strategies and the relocation of livestock households out of areas where livestock farming is not allowed according to Resolution No. 160/2021/NQ-HDND of the Provincial People's Council (stipulating areas within the inner city of cities, towns, townships, and residential areas where livestock farming is not allowed, regulating areas for raising swiftlets and support policies when relocating livestock facilities out of areas where livestock farming is not allowed in the province).
In the two towns of Gio Linh and Cua Viet, there is no land fund planning for livestock development, so the issue of households wanting to relocate livestock facilities out of areas where livestock farming is not allowed has not been resolved. In addition, many livestock households with livestock that meet the farm criteria according to Decree 13/2020/ND-CP are still located in residential areas, not meeting the farm criteria as prescribed.
Another difficulty that many livestock farming households in the district are facing is the lack of capital for production. To invest in building large-scale pig and chicken farms, farmers have to spend billions of dong, but borrowing from banks is very difficult, many households have to borrow from outside with high interest rates, so households are reluctant to invest in concentrated livestock farming areas.
In order to develop farm animal husbandry, in the coming time, the locality needs to synchronously implement many solutions, including focusing on promoting the conversion of ineffective production land to animal husbandry. Planning concentrated animal husbandry areas, at the same time, increasing the call for and creating conditions for outside investors to invest in the district.
Promote the development of poultry farming in the direction of farm farming, encourage the development of farm farming in association with enterprises. Guide and create conditions for people to complete the procedures and documents to be recognized as qualified for livestock farm production.
Continue to promote, mobilize, and raise awareness of sustainable livestock development and environmental protection for livestock farmers, and encourage households to organize production in the direction of large-scale livestock farming. On the other hand, it is necessary to increase support and guidance on procedures, and prioritize the allocation of suitable land funds to attract investors to implement large-scale livestock farming projects in the locality.
