Specifically, during recess yesterday morning, April 17, a group of three male sixth graders discovered a floating material left over from the war near the walkway between two rows of classrooms, close to the fence and the multi-purpose building. They quickly reported it to the school leadership. The shell was then zoned as dangerous.
The school leaders also asked the students to return to class and immediately reported to the Cam Chinh Commune Military Command to assign guards while waiting for the PeaceTrees Vietnam Project's handling team to arrive.
According to Ms. Giang, the day before, the school hired an excavator to dig a new pit for the long jump gym. The shell was mixed in with the newly dug up dirt. Luckily, the construction team did not hit the shell.
PeaceTrees Vietnam said the explosive was identified as the head of a 40mm mortar shell, an extremely dangerous type of ammunition that should not be moved. The mobile disposal team waited until all students and teachers had returned for lunch before detonating the shell on the spot, ensuring absolute safety.
It is known that PeaceTrees Vietnam has just held a propaganda session on mine prevention at Le The Hieu Primary and Secondary School. This school has 359 students and 23 teachers studying and teaching.
