Towards building a professional, modern, comprehensive diplomacy in the new era

On March 7, 2025, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs coordinated with the Communist Magazine to organize a national scientific conference on "Vietnam's foreign affairs and diplomacy in the new era, the era of national rise" at the Diplomatic Academy, chaired by comrade Nguyen Xuan Thang, Politburo member, Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council; comrade Bui Thanh Son, member of the Party Central Committee, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs; comrade Hoang Trung Dung, member of the Party Central Committee, Editor-in-Chief of the Communist Magazine.

The conference was attended and discussed by more than 250 guests who are representatives of leaders of departments, ministries and branches, including the Central Party Office, the Central Policy and Strategy Committee, the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Committee, the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, National Defense, Public Security, Industry and Trade, Home Affairs, Culture - Sports and Tourism, Science - Technology, the Central Theoretical Council, the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, representatives of leaders of some localities, enterprises and many experts, scholars from research institutes, universities across the country and outstanding students of the Diplomatic Academy.

Editor-in-Chief of Communist Magazine Ho Trung Dung opened the workshop, emphasizing the requirements for ministries, departments and sectors in the process of national development, especially in the context of the world continuing to develop in a complex and rapidly changing manner. He emphasized that after 80 years of building and accumulating resources, Vietnam is entering a new era, facing the requirement of rapid, strong, sustainable and comprehensive development in all fields. Therefore, sectors need to have proactive strategies, clearly defining the direction to achieve two important strategic goals by 2030 and 2045.

After the speeches of the departments, ministries and branches, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son expressed his appreciation for the participation of the delegates, as well as his appreciation for the presentations. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister said that, in the face of the complex and unpredictable changes in the international situation, the foreign affairs sector needs to take on an important role in maintaining a peaceful environment, taking advantage of favorable conditions to promote the country's development. Clarifying the theoretical basis for the concept of "new era" is necessary, as well as constantly innovating and improving the capacity of the Vietnamese diplomatic sector to meet the increasingly high requirements and tasks, towards building a comprehensive, modern, professional diplomacy, suitable for the new era. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs needs to actively receive comments and contributions with a receptive spirit and emphasize the importance of perfecting theories and summarizing practical experiences to improve the effectiveness of foreign affairs in the new period.

Concluding the workshop, Comrade Nguyen Xuan Thang, Politburo member, Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council, highly appreciated the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Communist Review in organizing the workshop, demonstrating a proactive and timely spirit in the context of the entire political system promoting the institutionalization of the "new era" content. He emphasized a number of important orientations for foreign affairs in the new period based on Marxism-Leninism, Ho Chi Minh's diplomatic thought, inheriting the tradition of national diplomacy and absorbing the quintessence of human civilization. He emphasized that diplomacy in the new era needs to promote its pioneering role, closely coordinating with national defense and security to carry out important and regular tasks. At the same time, foreign affairs must become a bridge between internal and external forces, effectively utilizing external resources to expand development space, create new opportunities, and contribute to promoting the country's strategic breakthroughs. Finally, promote the field of foreign affairs and communications, promote the image and values ​​of Vietnam to the world, and enhance Vietnam's role and contribution to common regional and international issues.

Since the 13th National Party Congress, Vietnam has faced complex and unpredictable developments in the world, the role of diplomacy has been increasingly enhanced, requiring pioneering and a spirit of continuous innovation, daring to think, daring to do. The national scientific conference "Vietnam's foreign affairs and diplomacy in the new era, the era of national development" is an important event for delegates and speakers to exchange ideas, discuss and evaluate in depth.

Nearly 50 presentations from leaders, scholars, scientists of ministries, departments, localities, enterprises and representatives of Vietnamese diplomatic agencies abroad were received. The presentations provided forecasts on the world situation and Vietnam's development prospects in the coming time, as well as foreign policy goals in various fields.
