Xam singing is a pure Vietnamese folk music genre, typical of the Northern Delta. After many ups and downs, in the past few years, an interesting phenomenon has been that many young people in Hanoi are passionate about Xam singing. They are reviving Xam singing in their own ways. Xam singing has appeared in music videos and on large, sparkling stages. More specifically, Xam experience shows have been able to sell tickets regularly, gradually becoming a professional entertainment activity in the capital, performed by young people and serving young people themselves.
People and tourists to Hanoi are no longer unfamiliar with Xam mats at Dong Xuan market, the foot of Ly Thai To statue, the Opera House stage, or recently new locations such as 34 Chau Long, 2 Hoa Lu… Xam still has its own flow, quietly amidst the busy social life of daily worries. Although there are still many difficulties and challenges.
“After efforts to restore, Xam has been increasingly noticed by many artists, such as Xam appearing in very hot reality TV game shows, even being the motivation to push the names of artists into the entertainment industry. In addition, Xam has also been included by famous artists in their art programs. It shows the strong vitality of traditional art and the value of that traditional art still has similarities with contemporary art. Therefore, young people not only exploit it with the desire to preserve it but also as a motivation for them to assert themselves in art, or create their own value for the program. Through that, it contributes to spreading Xam to the public,” said music researcher Nguyen Quang Long.
In fact, there are young people who listen because they understand Xam, love Xam and many people follow the trend. But even so, it is still a good sign like small sparks gathered together to be able to flare up when encountering, especially when our country is aiming to build a dossier to submit to UNESCO to include Xam in the list of intangible cultural heritage in need of urgent protection of humanity.
