Hue paints green, opens dedicated bicycle lanes on sidewalks

According to the reporter of Giao thong Newspaper, in mid-July 2024, construction units are "sprinting" to complete the project of painting lanes for cyclists on the sidewalks of some roads in the An Van Duong New Urban Area, Hue City, Thua Thien - Hue Province.

Here, the team of workers is divided into groups to carry out the bicycle lane painting projects.

Some sections of sidewalks reserved for bicycle lanes have also been painted with a white primer.

Bicycle lanes are being deployed along both sides of the sidewalks of Vo Nguyen Giap Street, To Huu Street and some streets in the Administrative Center of Thua Thien - Hue Province.

Here, the road for cyclists on the sidewalk is painted blue, bordered with yellow, located inside the sidewalk. In particular, for the 6m wide sidewalk, there will be a 1.45m wide bicycle lane.

For the 11m wide sidewalk, 2 bicycle lanes 2.9m wide will be arranged.

This is one of many items under the Project of the Program for Development of Type II Urban Areas (Green Cities) - a component project of Thua Thien - Hue, invested by the Department of Planning and Investment of Thua Thien - Hue province, which is being implemented, including 10 construction packages.

The project aims to improve and expand the transport network, gradually completing the synchronous urban infrastructure...

At the same time, it creates momentum for urban development, promotes the development of trade and service businesses and exploits tourism potential, creates jobs and increases income for local people; improves environmental sanitation conditions, enhances the urban landscape, thereby improving people's health and quality of life.

According to the Management Board of the Investment Project for the Development of Type 2 Urban Areas in Thua Thien - Hue, painting a part of the sidewalk green for cyclists is a criterion of the project, which was set out from the beginning to ensure safety for cyclists; contributing to the goal of developing infrastructure for bicycles, building a bicycle-based tourism city, especially building a green city.

The project of painting sidewalks and bicycle lanes on Vo Nguyen Giap and To Huu streets... has a total cost of about 3 billion VND, belonging to package 26: Trees, sidewalks, drainage, and central lighting in the new urban area of ​​An Van Duong with a total value of 141.52 billion VND.

Currently, the painting of lanes for cyclists is being implemented mainly on Vo Nguyen Giap Street (2.1km), To Huu Street (1.9km) and some streets in the Thua Thien - Hue Province Concentrated Administrative Area in An Van Duong New Urban Area with a total length of about 8km and will soon be implemented on Bui Thi Xuan Street.

Up to now, Hue City is the first city in Vietnam to reserve a part of the sidewalk for cyclists. Mr. Le Thanh Bac, Deputy Director of the Green Urban Project Management Board of Thua Thien - Hue province, said that reserving a part of the sidewalk for bicycles has been successfully implemented in many large cities around the world in a civilized manner, both encouraging people to ride bicycles and creating a green, environmentally friendly city.

During the project implementation, there were still some shortcomings, such as on the sidewalk of the bicycle lane on To Huu Street, there were still fire hydrants protruding high, and in some places, electric poles were blocking the lane...

The leader of the Green Urban Project Management Board of Thua Thien - Hue province said that this situation is due to the "overlap" between the old project and the new project when upgrading To Huu street. In the near future, the fire hydrants will be relocated to ensure safety for cyclists on the sidewalk...
