French research cooperation

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên28/11/2023

Today, November 28th, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) held a ceremony to celebrate 40 years of research cooperation with the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS).

Contributing to helping Vietnam approach advanced science and technology.

According to Professor Le Truong Giang, Vice President of VAST, the signing of a cooperation agreement between the Vietnam Academy of Science (the former name of VAST) and CNRS in Paris in 1983 opened up opportunities for Vietnamese scientists to gain further access to advanced science and an academic environment, laying the foundation for future development.

Research collaborations between VAST and CNRS have facilitated the exchange of scientists to conduct joint research, organize workshops, enhance research equipment, and form and connect interdisciplinary research groups, increasing development from basic to applied research, aiming to create high-quality products, and acting as a driving force for innovation and technology transfer between CNRS and VAST.

One of the outstanding achievements in the cooperation between the two sides is the series of specialized training courses, held annually since 1997. From these courses, more than a thousand Vietnamese researchers have been sent to CNRS for scientific exchange, internships, and master's and doctoral training. Among them, more than 100 have successfully defended their master's and doctoral dissertations, becoming key scientific staff members of VAST.

Building upon the close cooperation in training and research between VAST and CNRS, the University of Science and Technology of Hanoi (USTH) was established in 2009. This collaboration between VAST and CNRS provided opportunities for many young scientists from VAST to study and conduct research in an international environment, while also contributing to USTH's goal of achieving international standards in training and scientific research.

We will prepare for the future together.

At the ceremony, Professor Antoine Petit, President of CNRS, remarked that 40 years is a significant period of time, during which both sides have successfully collaborated effectively and with high quality in research and training. The areas of cooperation are diverse.

"It may be subjective (Professor Petit comes from a mathematics background - PV), but I can affirm that cooperation between the two countries in the field of mathematics is exemplary. We should, or could, develop cooperation in other fields following the model of cooperation in mathematics," Professor Petit said.

According to Professor Antoine Petit, collaborative research in mathematics serves as a model for other fields in the Vietnam-France cooperation relationship.

According to Professor Petit, the two institutions need to restore the specialized training courses in the near future. "These specialized courses will help us train future generations of scientists and establish collaborative relationships between young researchers from both sides to build upon what has already been achieved. Vietnam should trust in the support of CNRS, and not only CNRS, but the entire French scientific community will cooperate and work alongside Vietnamese scientists in scientific research across as many fields as possible," Professor Petit shared.

Ambassador Olivier Brochet of France to Vietnam also expressed his pride that France, and especially the CNRS, one of the world's leading scientific research institutions and one of the units carrying out many top-level research projects in France, has accompanied Vietnam on the path to promoting scientific development.

In 2024, France will implement several activities to concretize this commitment. Next year, the French Minister of Science and Technology will visit Vietnam to continue the intergovernmental cooperation agreement on science and technology development.

In particular, in 2024, a research team from France specializing in oceanography and aquatic environments will visit Vietnam to conduct a joint research project with Vietnamese scientists.
