In the 50s and 60s of the 20th century, implementing the commitment of Chairman Mao Zedong and President Ho Chi Minh, a number of Vietnamese schools were moved to Guangxi to ensure the safety of teachers and students during the fierce and arduous resistance war.

In Guilin, schools such as Nguyen Van Troi, Nguyen Van Be, Vo Thi Sau and the Central Ethnic School were established one after another, forming the Vietnam 2/9 School system.

Many generations of Vietnamese revolutionary cadres were trained and matured in these schools, making important contributions to the resistance war, liberating the South and unifying the country, while marking a special period in the Vietnam-China friendship.

In particular, during the anti-American resistance war, thousands of Vietnamese students were sent here to study at Guilin Duc Tai School (located on the campus of Guangxi Normal University today).

The development history of Guilin Duc Tai School is a clear demonstration of the strong friendship between Vietnam and China. Established in the early 1940s, this school trained many generations of excellent revolutionary cadres to serve the resistance.

This is not only a place to impart cultural knowledge but also to train political qualities, helping Vietnam build a team of talented people to serve the cause of national liberation.

The support from the Chinese government and people for Guilin Yucai School also demonstrates the spirit of solidarity and sincere assistance between the two countries.

During its operation, the school has received special attention from China, from its facilities, teaching staff to living conditions for Vietnamese students. Generations of students trained here later became leaders and intellectuals who made important contributions to the development of Vietnam.

Deepening cooperation

As one of the major educational centers in Southern China, in recent years, Guangxi has actively promoted cooperation with many universities in Vietnam through student exchange programs, joint training and scientific research.

In addition to joint training programs, the Chinese government and Guangxi province also provide many scholarships for Vietnamese students, creating favorable conditions for students of both countries to access high-quality education.

Among them, Guangxi Normal University plays a particularly important role in educational cooperation with Vietnam. The school has signed many cooperation agreements with leading universities in Vietnam, focusing on areas such as teacher training, educational research, academic exchange and language teaching.

Sharing with TG&VN , Mr. Li Xianxian, Vice President of Guangxi Normal University said: “Our focus is on promoting cooperation and exchange in the field of education, including cultural exchanges, language learning, as well as cooperation in science, innovation and talent training in new technology industries. Currently, this cooperation is becoming increasingly extensive.”

Every year, Guangxi Normal University receives a large number of Vietnamese students to study Bachelor, Master and Doctoral programs. The school also actively supports lecturer exchange programs between the two countries, helping to improve the quality of teaching and scientific research.

In addition, the school also expanded its Vietnamese language training program to meet the growing demand for human resources who can use both languages well: Chinese and Vietnamese.

“The school is also planning to open a Vietnamese language major. Previously, we only had Vietnamese language courses, but now we are expanding it into a complete major. At the same time, we always create conditions for students from both countries to exchange more, such as accepting Vietnamese students to study in China and sending Chinese students to study in Vietnam. Through these cooperative activities, we hope to further strengthen the friendship between the two countries,” Mr. Ly Tien Hien affirmed.

Bridge to strengthen bilateral relations

With increasingly strong relations, the prospects for educational cooperation between Vietnam and Guangxi are huge. Not only limited to language training, the two sides can also expand to new areas such as information technology, artificial intelligence, environmental science and renewable energy.

According to Mr. Ly Tien Hien, in the coming time, Guangxi will continue to promote educational cooperation with Vietnam, focusing on many important aspects to strengthen bilateral relations and improve training quality.

First of all, the two sides will focus on preserving and expanding cultural exchanges through academic activities and cultural exchanges, helping students from both countries gain a deeper understanding of each other's history, culture and traditions.

In addition, the application of advanced technology, especially artificial intelligence (AI), will be promoted to improve educational efficiency. Guangxi Normal University has been building digital documents to serve international students, contributing to expanding educational influence and creating more favorable conditions for learners.

In addition, bilateral cooperation between Guangxi Normal University and Vietnamese educational institutions will continue to be promoted through opening Vietnamese language courses and exchanging students and lecturers between the two countries.

These programs not only provide students with the opportunity to study in a diverse environment but also contribute to strengthening the connection between training institutions on both sides.

Mr. Li Xianxian emphasized: “China and Vietnam are inseparable neighbors. No matter what, the two countries will still live in harmony and cooperate for development, because that is beneficial to both sides. I believe that in the future, we will build a stronger friendship and a more stable cooperative relationship, especially in the field of education.”

In the context of increasingly important international cooperation, education will continue to be a bridge to help Vietnam and Guangxi Province strengthen their strong bilateral relationship. Current cooperation programs between the two countries not only help improve the quality of human resources but also contribute to promoting mutual understanding, opening up a future of sustainable cooperation and development.

Guangxi Normal University is one of the schools with the largest number of Vietnamese students in China. Currently, the school is training more than 5,000 Vietnamese students. By 2024, nearly 20,000 new generation Vietnamese students will have completed their courses and returned home.
