Hong Vy - a life of fiery passion

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên06/05/2023

A few years ago, Hong Vy and her artist friends organized the "Love and Passion" series, showcasing classical and folk music from Vietnam and around the world. Both shows ran for four nights in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, leaving audiences with a sense of exhilaration about the beauty of music and the dedication of the artists. At the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House, the audience stood up and applauded continuously, remaining so throughout the three encore songs – a truly rare occurrence.

Even pop stars are hesitant to put on their own shows, but Hong Vy, a classical music artist, has had her own ventures, allowing her to sing what she loves and cherishes, and to fully live out her passion as a performing artist.

At Vy's year-end 2020 live show in Hanoi , which Hong Vy poured her heart and soul into as a masterpiece, after she finished singing " The Girl Sharpening Bamboo Stakes ," one of the songs that accompanied Hong Vy's voice after the 2001 Sao Mai competition, the audience below applauded loudly, while backstage, her fellow artists high-fived each other and exclaimed, "This girl's bamboo stakes are still perfectly sharp!" Watching and listening to Vy sing like that, no one would think that she was going through a life-or-death struggle for her life.

Perhaps not many people know about Hong Vy, even those who love her singing and have learned about her life, that although she spent most of her life and artistic career in Hanoi before moving to Ho Chi Minh City, Hong Vy possesses a special quality of a girl from the highlands. She also has a hometown in Kon Tum , which has contributed to her strong and free-spirited personality.

Later, growing up in a military environment made Hong Vy even stronger, enabling her to face both a challenging personal life and a serious illness.

Many years ago, some music producers and promoters in the South heard Hong Vy's recordings from her two revolutionary music albums, " Hoa Lua & Vy" and "Vinh Quang Viet Nam " (a special album featuring songs about President Ho Chi Minh). They were surprised by how gentle, beautiful, smooth, and elegant her voice was, especially for a "revolutionary" song. Some wondered why such a beautiful voice didn't expand into love songs, which would have attracted a wider audience. Later, Vy released her final album, "Giac Mo Mua La ," with lyrical songs about Hanoi, as a farewell to the city she had lived in from her childhood to her rise to fame, before moving to the South to become a leading vocalist at the Ho Chi Minh City Symphony Orchestra and Opera House. This was where Hong Vy was able to pursue another great passion besides revolutionary music: opera, with roles and classical excerpts that left an unforgettable mark.

As her cancer worsened, Vy probably knew her time was running out. She cherished the idea of doing more of what her friends and fans had wanted to hear from her beautiful voice for so many years. Like singing classic Vietnamese songs from the early days of modern music, classic lullabies, or timeless love songs… Not only for those who loved her voice, but also as a legacy she wanted to leave to her son. He had begun to appreciate the value of his mother's singing, and had learned to seek out and cherish everything related to her.

Sadly, Vy didn't have enough time to do all of that. In her final days, she still called her artist friends to perform at Hospital 175 for the patients and medical staff where she had been treated. Vy couldn't be there, but everyone talked about her a lot, and it brought so many emotions, laughter, and tears, remembering the singer who lived beautifully and fought like a warrior until her last breath.
