On June 13th, Hanoi Eye Hospital, Branch 2, launched its Tissue Bank and the Association for the Promotion of Tissue and Organ Donation within the hospital. On the same occasion, the hospital launched a registration campaign for "Donating tissues, organs, corneas, and body parts" in response to the Prime Minister's call.

Professor Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Minister of Health, shared: "Cornea donation is a noble act, bringing light and hope to those who unfortunately lose their sight. When a person passes away, if their corneas are donated, it can bring light to two other people. This is a compassionate act, contributing to giving new life to patients. By donating corneas, we not only help patients but also leave a valuable legacy, making our passing more meaningful than ever."
Since the first corneal donation in April 2007 by Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hoa (from Con Thoi, Kim Son, Ninh Binh), 963 people nationwide have donated corneas. The majority of these donations are concentrated in Ninh Binh and Nam Dinh provinces. Thanks to these donated corneas, many people have received corneal transplants and returned to normal working and living lives.
According to Associate Professor Dr. Hoang Thi Minh Chau, Chairwoman of the Professional Council of Hanoi Eye Hospital 2, blindness due to corneal diseases is common in developing countries. Currently, in Vietnam, nearly 1 million people are blind due to various eye diseases. For those unfortunate enough to become blind, their lives are almost hopeless.
Dr. Chau added: "Although corneal transplant surgery in Vietnam has reached an advanced and modern level, and the number of surgeons is increasing, due to the extreme scarcity of corneas, the amount of corneal donations in recent times has only met a very small fraction of the actual demand."
Therefore, hundreds of thousands of patients are forced to live in blindness, waiting for the sole source of corneas from donors after their death. We hope that people will understand the noble significance of donating a part of their body after death, which will help many others to have a new lease on life; especially helping those with corneal diseases regain their sight, return to normal life and work; and at the same time, reduce the burden on families and society.
Currently, the National Eye Hospital has nearly 1,000 people on the waiting list for corneal transplants, and this number is increasing over time.
