On June 13, Hanoi Eye Hospital, Branch 2, launched the Tissue Bank and the Hospital's Association for Donating Tissues and Human Organs. On the same occasion, the hospital launched a registration campaign for "Donating Tissues, Organs, Cornes, and Human Organs" in response to the Prime Minister's call.
Prof. Dr. Tran Van Thuan, Deputy Minister of Health, shared: "Cornea donation is a noble act, bringing light and hope to those who unfortunately lost their sight. When a person passes away, if their cornea is donated, it can bring light to two other people. This is a compassionate act, contributing to bringing new life to the sick. By donating corneas, we not only help the sick, but also leave a valuable legacy for life, making our departure more meaningful than ever."
Since the first cornea donation in April 2007 by Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hoa (in Con Thoi, Kim Son, Ninh Binh), up to now, the whole country has had 963 cornea donors. Most of them are concentrated in the two provinces of Ninh Binh and Nam Dinh. Thanks to this source of donated corneas, many people have received cornea transplants and returned to normal working and living lives.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Hoang Thi Minh Chau, Chairwoman of the Professional Council of Hanoi Eye Hospital 2, blindness due to corneal diseases is common in developing countries. Currently, in Vietnam, there are nearly 1 million people who are blind due to various eye diseases. For those who are unfortunately blind, their lives are almost hopeless.
Dr. Chau added: "Although corneal transplant surgery in Vietnam has reached an advanced and modern level, and the number of surgeons is increasing, due to the extremely scarce corneal resource, the number of corneal donations in the past has only met a very small number compared to the actual demand.
Therefore, hundreds of thousands of patients are forced to live blind, waiting for the only source of corneas from donors after death. We hope that people understand the noble meaning of donating a part of their body after death to help many others to be revived; especially helping people with corneal diseases to regain their sight, return to normal life and work; at the same time, reduce the burden on families and society.
Currently, at the Central Eye Hospital, the list of people waiting for corneal transplants is nearly 1,000 people, and this number is increasing over time.
