This morning, August 22, at the National Convention Center (Hanoi), the 4th Conference of Overseas Vietnamese and the Forum of Overseas Vietnamese Intellectuals and Experts officially opened. The event, chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in coordination with relevant ministries, branches and localities, with the theme "Overseas Vietnamese join hands to realize the aspiration to develop the country", gathered more than 400 overseas Vietnamese from 42 countries and territories, who are entrepreneurs, intellectuals, and leading experts in high-tech fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence (AI)... Gathering overseas Vietnamese intelligence
Speaking at the opening of the conference, Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son said that the conference on overseas Vietnamese worldwide has been held three times in 2009, 2012, and 2016 with the direct participation of more than 2,000 delegates. The 2024 conference marks the 20th anniversary of Resolution 36 of the Politburo on overseas Vietnamese affairs. For the first time, within the framework of the conference, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs chaired and coordinated with relevant agencies to organize the Forum on Overseas Vietnamese Intellectuals and Experts. This was a direct instruction from Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh during his official visit to Australia and New Zealand in March this year, demonstrating the Prime Minister's deep concern for overseas Vietnamese affairs.

The forum will be an opportunity for overseas experts and intellectuals to exchange information on development trends in the world and the region; give advice on green and sustainable development issues of the country; expand the innovation network... "We expect the 4th conference focusing on the Forum of Vietnamese Intellectuals and Experts Abroad 2024 to be a 'Dien Hong Conference', focusing on collective intelligence, increasing national solidarity, promoting resources, potentials and strengths of overseas Vietnamese for the development of the country, so that our compatriots at home and abroad can join hands to realize the aspiration of developing a prosperous and happy country," Minister Bui Thanh Son expressed.

Overseas Vietnamese hope to contribute more
Speaking at the opening session, Mr. Hoang Dinh Thang - President of the Union of Vietnamese Associations in Europe - expressed that in addition to the efforts of each individual in the overseas Vietnamese community, it is necessary to emphasize the importance of the correct policies of the Party and State towards overseas Vietnamese, the achievements in socio-economic development in the country, and achievements in the field of foreign affairs. According to him, all these factors have contributed to creating a favorable environment for the development and position of the overseas Vietnamese community.

"The overseas Vietnamese community, wherever they are, always carries deep affection for their homeland and country. We believe, are excited and proud of the country's development and increasing position. With the spirit of sharing the joys and sorrows, and working together with the people in the country, we wish to contribute more to the country's development," he said.

Mr. Johnathan Hanh Nguyen, a Filipino expatriate and chairman of the Imex Pan Pacific Group, assessed that people's diplomacy in recent years has contributed to strengthening friendly relations between Vietnam and other countries, protecting national interests, and introducing to international friends about the country and people of Vietnam, and the policies of the Party and State. "In particular, our overseas Vietnamese, with more than 6 million people living in more than 130 countries and territories, are an indispensable important force, having performed well the role of people's diplomacy, as well as mobilizing external resources for the country's development. As an overseas Vietnamese, I am proud to have contributed to those achievements," he shared. Mr. Jonathan Hanh Nguyen expressed his hope that with the spirit of patriotism, solidarity, and always looking back to the roots, overseas Vietnamese will continue to guide the next generation - the young generation of overseas Vietnamese, the country's outstanding young intellectuals - to follow in the footsteps of their fathers and uncles to return and join hands in building the homeland, contributing to further enhancing Vietnam's position in the international arena.
The forum of Vietnamese intellectuals and experts abroad with the theme "Overseas intellectuals and experts give advice on issues of green and sustainable development of the country" will take place this morning (August 22). In the afternoon, the VK4 Conference will take place with 4 thematic sessions: Overseas Vietnamese and the development of high technology in Vietnam; Overseas Vietnamese enterprises and businessmen accompanying the country; Great national unity, association work and the role of the young generation of overseas Vietnamese; Overseas Vietnamese - Ambassadors of Vietnamese culture and language.

Currently, the overseas Vietnamese community has more than 6 million people, living and working in 130 countries and territories. Of which, the number of people with university degrees or higher accounts for about 10%, equivalent to 600,000 people. Over the past 30 years, the total amount of remittances sent back to the country has reached more than 200 billion USD, equivalent to the amount of foreign direct investment disbursement in the same period. By the end of 2023, overseas Vietnamese had invested in 421 foreign direct investment projects with a total registered capital of 1.72 billion USD. "Those are quantifiable numbers, besides there are many contributions of gray matter and intelligence that cannot be measured," Minister Bui Thanh Son shared.
