More than 3,000 people were scammed by buying cheap high-end phones on social networks.

(Dan Tri) - A group of people in Hai Duong province posted cheap phones for sale on social networks to trick more than 3,000 customers, stealing about 8 billion VND.

On January 3, Dak Song District Police said they had coordinated with the professional departments of Dak Nong Provincial Police to destroy a group of people using social networks to sell old, damaged phones to customers, appropriating about 8 billion VND.

The police have detained Do Van Phong (28 years old), Tran Thi Lan (28 years old) and Nhu Van Duong (20 years old), all residing in Binh Giang district, Hai Duong province, to investigate the act of fraud and appropriation of property on the internet. Notably, Phong and Lan are husband and wife.

According to the investigation results, Phong and his wife took advantage of social networking platforms to create groups and pages on Facebook, posting new iPhone products for sale at very cheap prices, 1-4 million VND/unit.

When a customer closes an order, Phong and Duong use an old or damaged iPhone, put it in a new box, and package it to deliver to the customer.

The subjects requested the shipping unit not to let the customer check the goods before receiving them, but to pay first. Therefore, when the customer finished transferring the money, they checked and discovered that they had been scammed but could not complain to get their money back, due to the policy of the shipping units.

Among the victims, a resident of Dak Song district was scammed out of 2 million VND when buying a phone and reported it to the police.

During the investigation, the police discovered and seized many exhibits and evidence related to the group's fraudulent property appropriation.

Using this trick, from February to December 2024, the group defrauded more than 3,000 people nationwide, appropriating about 8 billion VND.
