On May 12, sources familiar with the matter said that 237,000 current and former US federal government employees had their personal information exposed in a data breach at the US Department of Transportation (USDOT).
Hackers have attacked the TRANServe system that provides benefits and travel expenses support for government employees.
The attack affected 114,000 current and 123,000 former employees of US federal agencies. It is not yet clear whether the stolen personal information was used for illegal purposes.
In a notice sent to Congress the same day, USDOT said that authorities had initially handled and prevented the risk of data leakage in a number of systems performing administrative functions, including the system for processing benefits and supporting travel expenses for federal agency employees.
According to the ministry, the data breach did not affect traffic safety monitoring systems. The incident is currently under investigation.
US federal agencies and federal agency employees have been targets of cybercrime attacks.
In 2014 and 2015, the US Office of Personnel Management (OPM) suffered two data breaches, exposing personal information of more than 22 million people, including 4.2 million employees at that time./.
