According to the Panamanian Ministry of Security (Minseg), from January 1 to August 25, 2024, 231,089 illegal migrants from Colombia to Panama through the Darien forest, of which the majority were Venezuelans (153,226 people, accounting for 66.3%), followed by Colombians (14,659 people, 6.3%), Ecuadorians (14,569 people, 6.3%)... The ultimate goal of these migrants is to cross the border into the United States through the northern border of Mexico.
The 265km-long Darien Forest, located between Colombia and Panama, is considered a “main corridor” for migrants from South America to the US because it is cheaper than traveling by sea. However, it is also one of the most dangerous regions in the world .
Migrants face many dangers such as poisonous snakes, wild animals, rugged terrain and criminal gangs, especially Colombia's Clan del Golfo gang.
