More than 200 Vietnamese books donated to Goethe University Frankfurt library

On October 15, as part of the working program to participate in the Frankfurt International Book Fair, the delegation of Ho Chi Minh City visited and worked with the Department of Southeast Asian Studies, Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany.

Sharing with the delegation at the meeting, the representative of the Southeast Asian Studies Department, Prof. Arndt Graf, introduced the history of the school. Accordingly, the Southeast Asian Studies Department was formed in the 1960s by Prof. Otto Karow, now part of the Institute of East Asian Philology of the Faculty of Languages ​​and Cultures of Goethe University. The department has programs and courses in Vietnamese for students. Currently, the school also organizes free Vietnamese language classes for Vietnamese children at the school. The school library is very interested in providing Vietnamese language books, books on Vietnamese culture and society for students and interested readers to have reference materials.

More than 200 Vietnamese books donated to Goethe University Frankfurt library

Mr. Holger Warnk, lecturer and faculty librarian, shared more information related to the school's library system as well as books about Vietnam. The school has 7 libraries, of which library number 5 that the delegation visited belongs to the Faculty of Language and Culture Sciences, which has about 500,000 publications of all kinds.

The delegation experienced the conveniences of paper books, e-books, and document storage. According to the reporter, many Vietnamese books from Vietnamese publishers are available on the library's shelves, mainly books about history, culture, language, ethnicity, etc.

Mr. Holger Warnk also introduced the delegation to the Vietnamese book gallery, writing about Vietnam past and present. Notably, there are many valuable paper books from the second half of the 19th century printed in Vietnam: Hoc tro kho phu (1883), Chuyen kho hum (1884), Luc suc tranh cong (1911)...

Sharing at the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Hoi, Deputy Director of the Department of Information and Communications of Ho Chi Minh City, informed the representative of the Southeast Asian Studies Department about the interest of Vietnam in general, and Ho Chi Minh City in particular, in books, publishing and reading culture. The delegation was very pleased with the school's interest in the Vietnamese language teaching program for students and foreigners. Therefore, when participating in the Frankfurt International Book Fair, the delegation arranged a visit and meeting to present Vietnamese books on culture, history, society... to the department, to supplement the library system of the faculty and school.

At the meeting, representatives of many publishing units and libraries of the city such as: City General Publishing House, Youth Publishing House, City General Science Library... introduced more about the city's publishing activities, books with practical reference value for students and readers of the school such as the series History of Vietnam in pictures, Vietnamese Drama, reformed opera Khao va luan, distant lands on the beautiful planet, brief study of the place names of the Southern region...

At the meeting, the delegation presented more than 200 books to the school representatives. Prof. Arndt Graf expressed his joy, emotion and confidence that the library and faculty will make good use of these books in the school's educational and training activities related to Southeast Asia and Vietnam.
