The Vietnam Railway Authority has just reported to the Ministry of Transport on solutions to overcome weak points of the entire railway network.

Of which, this unit proposed to allocate more than 2,000 billion VND to upgrade the Hanoi - Dong Dang railway line.

Regarding the reason for the proposal, the Vietnam Railway Authority said that the Hanoi - Dong Dang railway line has a total length of 167km, was built and put into operation since 1970.

Currently, the cement concrete tunnel shell structure has small cracks and water leaks, but has not significantly affected the safety of the project.

However, it is necessary to evaluate these tunnels to consider timely renovation and repair to ensure train safety.

There are a total of 60 bridges on the route, including one extra large bridge, four large bridges, nine medium bridges and 46 small bridges.

Of which, Long Bien bridge is currently seriously degraded and needs to be repaired soon to ensure train safety; the remaining bridges basically meet the operating requirements. There are also 8 tunnels on the route with a total length of 1,992m.

Regarding the road, the current upper-level structure is mainly old P43 rails and regular concrete sleepers, which need to be replaced with new upper-level structure to meet the increasing operating speed and transportation needs of the route.

In particular, there are a total of 67 key locations on the route that need to be repaired and reinforced in the annual railway infrastructure management and maintenance plan.

Based on the above facts, the Vietnam Railway Authority proposed to establish the Project to Renovate and Upgrade the Hanoi - Dong Dang Railway Line. The project will be implemented in the period 2026 - 2031.

The project will invest in items such as: upgrading and renovating the upper floors' architecture; locally renovating the plane, increasing the curve radius at transportation bottlenecks, ensuring train safety; reinforcing and renovating sewers, drainage systems and weak roadbeds.

At the same time, restore the station lines for stations with limited number of lines, renovate existing stations for effective exploitation, contribute to increasing capacity, improve passenger and freight transport services, create favorable conditions for train dispatching and organization; renovate weak tunnels to ensure train safety, eliminate black spots, and limit speed.

Total expected investment is 2,238 billion VND from medium-term public investment capital for the period 2026 - 2031.

The Vietnam Railway Authority said the project aims to ensure train safety and improve throughput capacity, transport capacity, and enhance international intermodal transport with China and Europe.
