Students participating in the city's excellent student selection exam are high school students in Hanoi, with academic results and training results for the 2023-2024 school year from good or better, selected for the team of the unit registering for the exam; each student is only allowed to take one exam.
The exam for selecting excellent students in the city for 12th grade cultural subjects at high school level has one exam session. In particular, the IT exam is in the form of computer programming; foreign language subjects have listening skills; other subjects are tested in the form of writing on paper.
The number of students taking the exam for each school is about 1-3 students/subject depending on the number of 12th grade classes and the school's performance in the exam in the previous 2 consecutive years.
Specialized high schools and schools with specialized classes (Hanoi - Amsterdam Specialized High School, Nguyen Hue Specialized High School, Chu Van An High School, Son Tay High School) are allowed to send a maximum of 25 students/subject.

High schools with German and Japanese language programs are allowed to send a maximum of 10 students to take the German and Japanese language exams each.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Mr. Tran The Cuong, Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, said the exam aims to select outstanding students, creating a competitive atmosphere in the city-wide learning environment.
"Hanoi City is working with departments and agencies to create all conditions to take the best care of students. In particular, we are promoting training and searching for talents to contribute to the fields of science, economics, society, etc., because more than anyone else, they are the future owners of the country," said the Department Director.
Answering a question from Dan Tri reporter, the head of the capital's education sector said that not only students from specialized schools and selective classes will participate, this year's Hanoi high school cultural subject excellent student exam has the participation of many suburban schools, including many schools in difficult areas such as Ba Vi, schools with many ethnic minority students.

This shows that the gap between schools in urban and suburban areas; schools in disadvantaged areas and schools in urban areas is gradually narrowing. This is also the goal that the education sector of the capital is striving to achieve.
"Last year, the quality of mass education increased by 17 places, from 27th in the country to 11th. Key education also improved. In particular, the capital's education sector reported to the city to have an incentive mechanism for students who won international Olympic medals, in which the highest bonus for each student was up to 300 million VND, increasing the bonus for teachers who lead teams with students winning prizes.
We hope this is a breakthrough, a motivation for teachers and students, creating competition between inner-city and suburban students, only then can quality be improved," affirmed the Director of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training.
