The 2023 Ho Chi Minh City 10th grade entrance exam will take place on June 6 and 7. More than 96,000 candidates registered to take the exam, about 2,000 more than in 2022.
96,000 candidates in Ho Chi Minh City begin competing for 77,000 places in public 10th grade. |
This morning (June 6), more than 96,000 students in Ho Chi Minh City took the first test of the 10th grade entrance exam - the Literature test. They will participate in the 2-day exam to compete for places in 114 public high schools in the city.
The number of candidates increased, but the quota for public 10th grade increased at an even higher rate: the total quota for public high schools is 77,294, about 5,000 more than in 2022.
High schools with the highest enrollment quotas for grade 10 include Marie Curie High School (District 3) with 1,200 quotas, Hung Vuong High School (District 5) with 1,035 quotas, and Mac Dinh Chi High School (District 6) with 1,045 quotas.
The top high schools have the following enrollment quotas: Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1) with 745 enrollment quotas; Le Quy Don High School (District 3) with 675 enrollment quotas; Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School (District 3) with 735 enrollment quotas; Gia Dinh High School (Binh Thanh District) with 945 enrollment quotas; Nguyen Huu Huan High School (Thu Duc City) with 785 enrollment quotas; Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted with 890 enrollment quotas; Tran Dai Nghia High School for the Gifted with 510 enrollment quotas.
Although there is no shortage of non-public school places, in the current difficult economic climate, tuition costs will be a burden for many parents.
Therefore, the level of competition in this exam is still very high, especially for some traditional schools such as Nguyen Thuong Hien High School, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School, Gia Dinh High School, Luong The Vinh High School, Mac Dinh Chi High School, Gia Dinh High School...
"Tips" to reduce pressure for 10th grade students
However, over the years, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training has applied a number of methods to reduce psychological pressure on students and parents.
According to regulations, each student in Ho Chi Minh City will be allowed to register for 3 choices to enter public grade 10. Unlike Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City does not divide enrollment areas, but encourages students to register for high school near their home.
In mid-April every year, the Department of Education and Training announces the quota for public grade 10. After that, the Department of Education and Training reserves about 10 days for students to register their wishes online.
After registration is closed, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will initially summarize the number of students registering for each school (registering for the first choice) and simultaneously announce it to parents and students. This is the basis for students and parents to know the competition rate of each school. After that, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will give students 1 week to adjust their choices if they want.
According to Mr. Vo Thien Cang - Head of the Department of Examination and Education Quality Assessment, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, this regulation is to help candidates increase their chances of entering public grade 10. Because in the first registration, students register their first choice but do not know the total number of choices to enter that school.
For example, a school has an enrollment quota of 500 students but statistics show that there are 1,000 first-choice applicants. If the quota remains the same, about 500 students will definitely fail. However, if adjustments are made, students can change their first-choice to another school with fewer applicants/quotas, thus increasing their chances of admission.
Mr. Cang also affirmed: "This does not affect the quality of the city's annual 10th grade enrollment."
Along with reducing psychological pressure, over the years, Ho Chi Minh City has maintained a rate of about 70% of students taking the exam having a place in a public school. This has somewhat relieved the pressure of getting into a public school in one of the most populous localities in the country.
To do this, Ho Chi Minh City always strives to build new schools and classrooms. Five years ago, Mr. Nguyen Thien Nhan, then Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee, compared Ho Chi Minh City to a "school construction corporation". On average, every five years, Ho Chi Minh City has an additional one million people, so every five years it must build enough schools for these one million people.
The whole country stipulates 20% of the budget for education, but Ho Chi Minh City always allocates 25% of the budget for education and training.
In early March, the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City reported to the City People's Committee on the progress of implementing the target of 300 classrooms/10,000 school-age population by 2025. Accordingly, as of December 2022, 12/22 districts and Thu Duc City have achieved the target of 300 classrooms/10,000 school-age population (from 3-18 years old).
Regarding the results of the implementation of the medium-term public investment plan for the period 2016-2020, the whole city has 721 education projects approved for investment, with a scale of 13,676 classrooms. However, only 415 projects with 7,478 classrooms have been completed and put into use, with an investment cost of more than VND 25,788 billion.
As of the end of December 2022, Ho Chi Minh City had 117 delayed education projects due to many reasons. Of these, the most were at the primary level with 49 projects, followed by preschool with 36 projects.
Thus, the new investment results reached 54.67% of the plan, including projects completed and put into use before 2016, including 30 projects with 739 classrooms. Therefore, the actual number of completed classrooms in the 2016-2020 period is 6,115.
From now until 2025, Ho Chi Minh City plans to add 8,889 classrooms at all levels, from preschool to high school.
