Every day, Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong spends a lot of time taking care of her flock of pigeons.
Being a hard-working, patient, studious farmer with a desire to become rich in her hometown, Ms. Huong borrowed capital to invest in a comprehensive economic model in 2015. Initially, her family invested in building a model to raise pigs, cows and ducks.
However, due to the impact of the epidemic and unstable output prices, the family's livestock model was forced to narrow down, and at times the barn had to be left empty.
But not discouraged, in 2017, realizing the potential and market demand for meat pigeons, through the Commune Women's Union, Ms. Huong was able to borrow 50 million VND in job creation capital from the Social Policy Bank and with the help of relatives to build barns, she initially bought 500 pairs of breeding pigeons to raise.
At first, without much experience, the flock grew slowly and economic efficiency was low: Birds incubated rotten eggs, baby birds died, healthy pigeons suddenly got sick... Due to lack of timely detection and treatment, a large number of birds died, causing great losses in breeds and capital.
After the first failure, Ms. Huong spent a lot of time learning about the characteristics, food, growth process, disease prevention, etc. for pigeons. She proactively went on field trips, learned knowledge and experience from some pigeon farms in Bac Giang province.
From there, adjust the breeding process, spend more time monitoring, observing, and recording information about changes and habits of this animal species, especially paying attention to strictly following vaccination for livestock; regularly disinfecting the breeding area to prevent pathogens and increase the resistance of livestock.
Every year, Nguyen Thi Huong's family earns hundreds of millions of dong from selling commercial pigeons.
In addition, Ms. Huong invested in an incubator to reduce the rate of damaged eggs, let the parent birds incubate fake eggs, shorten the incubation period: about 23-28 days after hatching, the parent birds raise the baby birds and they will be ready to sell. Gradually, the remaining birds are cared for properly, adapt to the new living environment, grow and develop well and start laying eggs and multiplying the flock.
To date, Ms. Huong's family's French pigeon breeding model has grown to 1,000 pairs of parent birds. With a stable selling price of commercial pigeons at around 250,000 VND/pair, she sells an average of 150 pairs per week, deducting expenses for an income of over 20 million VND/month.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Tuyet, Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Lien Hoa commune, said: The French pigeon raising model of Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong's family brings high economic efficiency and is encouraged to develop and replicate in the area. Every year, many women members come to visit and learn from Ms. Huong's enthusiastic sharing of experiences and technical support...
Not only is she good at economics, Ms. Huong is also always active and enthusiastic in participating in cultural, artistic, and sports movements... launched by the Women's Union at all levels, and has been commended and rewarded by the District and Commune Women's Unions.
