National scientific conference on 50 years of Vietnamese literature and art after national reunification

The workshop was organized by the Central Propaganda and Education Commission in coordination with the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism , the Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences, and the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations. Comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia, Politburo member, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Head of the Central Propaganda and Education Commission attended and chaired the workshop.

In his opening speech at the workshop, Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duy Bac, Permanent Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, affirmed: Fully aware of the special position and role of literature and arts in the revolutionary cause of the nation and people, the Communist Party of Vietnam always pays attention to this important field. Party documents through congresses have emphasized the great role of literature and arts in building new people, nurturing the soul, personality, social ethics, and arousing the aspiration to develop a prosperous and happy country.

Resolution No. 23-NQ/TW dated June 16, 2008 of the Politburo (10th tenure) on “Continuing to build and develop literature and arts in the new era” affirms: “Literature and arts are essential needs, expressing the human aspiration for truth, goodness and beauty; they are one of the great driving forces directly contributing to building the spiritual foundation of society and the comprehensive development of the Vietnamese people”. Our Party always respects and encourages the creative team of artists, while placing high demands on the ideology, humanity, national character and humanity in each work.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Duy Bac, over the past 50 years, the country's literature and arts have worthily inherited the tradition of a "patriotic and humanistic literature and arts, closely connected with the people and the nation"; at the same time, with the strong support from the idea of ​​innovation, literature and arts have strived to rise up, develop comprehensively, reflect and contribute to realizing the aspiration for national development. However, we must also frankly admit that after 50 years of national reunification, literature and arts still have some limitations, posing many urgent issues for the management, creation, theory-criticism and dissemination of literary and artistic works.

In terms of content and ideological value, contemporary literature and art still lacks works of high ideological and artistic value, commensurate with the scale of the renovation initiated and led by our Party and the cultural and historical depth of the nation. A part of the works are still far from reality, following easy tastes, leaning towards commerce and entertainment, lacking political and ideological courage.

Regarding the artists, there is currently a clear generation gap. The generation of artists who have created works before with rich life experiences and deep thoughts are gradually retreating into the background due to age and health; meanwhile, the young force, although dynamic, creative, and quick to approach new things, lacks depth of experience and solid value orientation. Regarding the mechanism and policies for developing arts and culture, reality shows that there is a significant lag between the policies and strong development practices of arts and culture. Traditional regulations and management models have not kept pace with the new creative characteristics, causing the development space of arts and culture to still be constrained and passive. The lack of close connection between cultural - educational - media institutions, state - society - market and cultural industry is slowing down the process of forming a dynamic, multi-/interdisciplinary and modern arts and culture creative ecosystem...

Speaking at the workshop, Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen The Ky, Vice Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council and Head of the Department of Literature and Art Theory and Criticism, and many delegates focused on analyzing the historical and social context that has affected the development of Vietnamese literature and art over the past 50 years; objectively and comprehensively assessing the current state of literature and art, proposing specific and practical solutions to develop Vietnamese literature and art in the new context. Associate Professor, Dr. Le Thi Ngoc Diep analyzed the changes in public aesthetic tastes and the impacts on Vietnamese literature and art from 1975 to the present. Colonel, Dr. People's Artist Nguyen Thi Thu Ha analyzed in depth Vietnamese dance art after 50 years of national reunification, proposing many solutions to promote dance art, especially ethnic folk dance. Associate Professor, Dr. Bui Hoai Son pointed out many problems and proposed 4 groups of solutions to perfect the policies and guidelines for developing culture and arts in accordance with the characteristics of creativity and the requirements of the times...

Concluding the workshop, Head of the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission Nguyen Trong Nghia said that the workshop received 138 presentations from scientists, experts, researchers, leaders and managers in the fields of culture and arts in central and local agencies. The content of the presentations mentioned and reflected many issues, from the historical and cultural context, to the development, results and contributions of Vietnamese arts and literature 50 years after the country's reunification; at the same time, recommendations and solutions were presented to continue to build an increasingly developed Vietnamese arts and literature, contributing to the successful implementation of goals in the new era - the era of the Vietnamese nation's rise.

The workshop received many enthusiastic opinions from experts, scientists and researchers of culture and arts.

Comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia requested that, from the results of the workshop, all levels, sectors, localities, agencies, units, teams of researchers, theorists, critics and artists nationwide continue to pay attention to and synchronously deploy the proposed tasks and solutions; effectively implement the resolutions and directives of the Party, especially the contents of the upcoming Resolution of the 14th National Congress on culture, literature and arts. Scientists, experts, theorists and critics continue to study and research, more fully identify the laws and trends of movement; especially analyze in depth the difficulties and obstacles and propose solutions, promote the achieved results, continue to build and develop an advanced Vietnamese literature and arts, imbued with national identity, imbued with the spirit of nationalism, democracy, humanity and science.

“In implementation, we need to uphold the courage to protect the truth, protect the right, the good, the beautiful, resolutely fight and criticize the deviant and wrong manifestations in the life of literature and art. Affirm the role of crystallizing, converging and strongly promoting the cultural and ideological traditions of our ancestors; thoroughly study Marxist literature and art theory, Ho Chi Minh's thought on literature and art, and at the same time effectively absorb the quintessence of human theory in the process of building and perfecting the theoretical system of literature and art and the value system of Vietnamese literature and art”, Comrade Nguyen Trong Nghia affirmed.

Head of the Central Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Commission Nguyen Trong Nghia suggested that artists and cultural and artistic activists stick closer to and immerse themselves in the country's vivid reality, promote social responsibility and civic duty, explore and create, constantly expand the scope and depth of capturing reality; deeply explain and interpret new and important issues, and strive to create more attractive works that are profound in ideological content and new in form.

Central and local ministries, branches and sectors continue to fully and deeply grasp and effectively implement the Party's resolutions on culture, arts and literature and the important instructions of General Secretary To Lam at the National Conference on Artists and Literature, December 30, 2024. Strengthen propaganda, further raise awareness of the very important position and role of arts and literature, thereby promoting the sense of responsibility, making appropriate decisions, creating motivation for artists to be creative and dedicated. In the process of institutionalizing the Party's viewpoints and policies into laws, the system of mechanisms and policies must ensure consistency, science, and practicality; the focus is on ensuring creative freedom, improving working conditions, liberating and promoting the creative potential of artists and literature, etc.
