XINHUA. Chinese President Xi Jinping and First Lady Bai Liyuan opened the China-Central Asia Summit in the ancient city of Xi'an, Shaanxi Province.

YONHAP. ​​The Korea Customs Service (KCS) seized 213 kg of drugs at the border in the first four months of 2023, up 32% from the same period in 2022.

THE STAR. Malaysia's Halal Development Corporation (HDC) and the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (Kotra) signed a MoU to strengthen cooperation in the Halal industry.

KHMER TIMES. Construction of a 135-km expressway connecting the two Cambodian cities of Phnom Penh and Bavet will begin on June 7, at an estimated cost of US$1.35 billion, to strengthen connectivity with Vietnam and boost economic ties between border provinces.

WB. Cambodia's economy is recovering steadily, with the World Bank (WB) forecasting growth of 5.5% in 2023.

FINANCIAL TIMES. Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced plans to invest Rs 1,050 crore ($13 billion) in India, meeting the growing demand in the cloud computing sector.

DAWN. Pakistan will take special measures to address the problem of out-of-school children and help as many school-age children as possible across the country to attend school.

UNICEF. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) is calling on the international community to continue supporting millions of children affected by the earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria.

AL JAZEERA. Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad arrived in Saudi Arabia to attend the Arab League (AL) Summit, marking the leader's first visit to the oil-rich kingdom since the outbreak of the Syrian conflict in 2011.

Europe

BBC. The UK will send the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth back to the Pacific to join the Carrier Strike Group (CGS) in 2025.

GUARDIAN. British telecommunications and television company BT will cut 55,000 jobs between now and 2030 to reduce operating costs, amid a difficult economic situation.

AFP. EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell proposed adding 3.5 billion euros ($3.85 billion) to the European Peace Mechanism (EPF), a fund used to provide military aid to Ukraine.

KREMLIN. Russia's decision to freeze the bank accounts of the Finnish Embassy and Consulates in Russia is a response to unfriendly actions by the West, including Finland.

REUTERS. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has agreed to a Russian proposal to hold talks in Moscow next week with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

PAP. The Polish government announced that several news websites such as daily newspapers Gazeta Wyborcza, Rzeczpospolita and Super Express were hit by distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks.

AFP. A Swiss parliamentary committee will investigate the reasons that brought Credit Suisse to the "brink" of bankruptcy and the process of UBS's takeover of Credit Suisse.

America

NBC. With Governor Greg Gianforte signing a law banning TikTok, effective January 1, 2024, Montana has become the first state in the US to block downloads of the world's most popular short-video app.

AP. US President Joe Biden is scheduled to meet privately with the remaining three leaders of the Quad group (including the US, India, Japan and Australia) on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Hiroshima, Japan.

AP. The U.S. Labor Department reported that initial jobless claims fell sharply last week, a sign that the labor market remains tight.

BLOOMBERG. Ford announced a recall of 422,000 SUVs in the US due to a video output error that prevents rearview camera images from being displayed, reducing the driver's visibility and increasing the risk of accidents.

REUTERS. Mexican police rescued 34 migrants from a farm, part of a group of 52 people kidnapped from a bus in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon, which borders the United States.

TASS. Russian and Cuban officials and business leaders announced Cuba's new preferential policies aimed at attracting Russian investment to its market.

Africa

AFP. About 250,000 Somalis have been displaced after the Shabelle River burst its banks and flooded streets in the city of Beledweyne, amid the worst drought in 40 years.

REUTERS. South Africa is working to get off the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) "grey" list , according to South African Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana.

AP. Nigeria and the United States have condemned an attack a day earlier on a convoy carrying U.S. diplomatic staff in southeastern Nigeria that left four people dead.

BLOOMBERG. Algeria's state oil company Sonatrach announced the award of a $1.5 billion contract to build a petrochemical complex to Petrofac-HQC, a joint venture between Britain's Petrofac and China's Global Engineering Corporation (HQC).

AFRICA NEWS. Armed bandits attacked a village in the Logone Oriental Region, southwestern Chad, killing at least 12 villagers and 6 bandits.

Oceania

ANTARA. Soldiers from the Indonesian National Defense Force (TNI), the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the Australian Defense Force (ADF) participated in a joint disaster preparedness exercise from May 15-27 at the ADF headquarters in Darwi, Australia.
