According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the country currently has 29,095 fishing vessels with a length of 15m or more. To date, 28,584 fishing vessels have installed voyage monitoring equipment in fishing and exploitation, reaching a rate of 98.25%. Localities have increased patrols, controls, organized 24/7 shifts to monitor and supervise; reviewed the work of confirming and certifying the traceability of exploited aquatic products; to date, no shipments exported to the European market have been found to violate IUU fishing.
Representatives of leaders of Departments, branches and local units attended the conference at the Ninh Thuan province bridge.
In recent times, Ninh Thuan has issued many documents directing the implementation of the fight against IUU fishing; at the same time, directing the sectors and localities in the province to proactively work, coordinate closely and request other provinces to support Ninh Thuan in preventing fishing vessels from violating foreign waters. The whole province currently has 2,302 fishing vessels, of which the total number of fishing vessels from 15 meters or more in operation is 869; all offshore fishing vessels have been granted fishing licenses; 100% of operating fishing vessels are equipped with voyage monitoring devices. Through propaganda and monitoring of the fishing vessel data system, in 2023 and by June 2024, there will be no cases of Ninh Thuan fishing vessels participating in marine fishing that encroach on or violate foreign waters.
Concluding the Conference, Deputy Prime Minister Tran Luu Quang affirmed: This is the golden time for Vietnam to remove the IUU "yellow card" as recommended by the EC. Therefore, the Party Committee, the government, relevant ministries and branches should actively and resolutely coordinate to implement solutions. The Deputy Prime Minister requested that localities thoroughly disseminate the contents of Directive No. 32 of the Secretariat on strengthening the Party's leadership in combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing and sustainable development of the fisheries sector; Resolution 04 of the Judicial Council "Guiding the application of a number of provisions of the Penal Code on criminal prosecution for acts related to illegal exploitation, trading and transportation of aquatic products". To overcome IUU fishing violations, localities need to focus on and immediately implement key tasks; Strictly manage fishing fleets, strictly handle acts of not installing monitoring equipment, using incorrect license plates; strictly implement traceability of aquatic products. Prepare records to strictly handle acts of combating illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing, focusing on groups of brokers who entice fishermen to organize illegal fishing. The Deputy Prime Minister also encouraged localities to develop their own mechanisms to strictly manage fishing fleets and overcome illegal fishing. Ministries, branches and law enforcement agencies need to coordinate synchronously, strictly manage and prevent illegal fishing; organize working groups to inspect localities to rectify existing problems and poor implementation of regulations on fishing.
