Kinhtedothi - Quoting the famous proverb: "We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from future generations", the Prime Minister emphasized that each of our actions today will decide the fate of future generations.
On November 19, 2024 (local time), in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, the 2024 G20 Summit continued with a Discussion Session on Sustainable Development and Energy Transition chaired by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, this year's G20 Chair. Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended and delivered a speech at the Discussion Session.
At the Discussion Session, leaders assessed that progress in implementing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals is slowing down, emphasizing the difficulties that developing countries face in ensuring a fair energy transition. Leaders also shared solutions to reduce economic inequality, improve social welfare and protect the environment. Green finance policies and mobilizing international resources to support developing countries received much support. The Conference affirmed the need to increase financial resources for the global energy transition, emphasizing the urgency of diversifying investment capital for technology and infrastructure, and strengthening public-private partnership to promote the energy transition, especially in developing countries.
In his speech, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh reaffirmed Vietnam's consistent and consistent policy on sustainable development and its commitment not to sacrifice social security, progress, social justice and environmental protection to pursue economic growth alone.
Quoting the famous proverb: “We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from future generations”, the Prime Minister emphasized that every action we take today will determine the fate of future generations. With that perspective, Vietnam pledges to make every effort, together with other countries, partners, and the international community, to strive to achieve the goal of net zero emissions before 2050, contributing to the development of a green, clean, beautiful, and sustainable world, for the future of future generations. To help put the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals back on track, accelerate, and reach the finish line on time, the Prime Minister shared with the Conference three proposals:
The first is to focus on promoting three key transformations: digital transformation, green transformation and energy transformation. The Prime Minister affirmed that digital transformation is an objective requirement and a foundation; green transformation is the center and guiding direction; energy transformation is the driving force for sustainable development and carbon emission reduction. The Prime Minister emphasized that science, technology and innovation play a key, breakthrough role and are the key to the transformation processes for sustainable development. Therefore, the Prime Minister suggested that the G20 should take the lead in connecting resources, sharing experiences, transferring technology, providing financial support, enhancing capacity and creating an open ecosystem of science, technology and innovation for developing countries with the principle of not politicizing science, technology and innovation.
The Prime Minister's second proposal is to focus on promoting investment in people with a consistent view that people are the center, the subject, the goal, the driving force and the most important resource of development; at the same time, focusing on progress, equity, social security and environmental protection. In that spirit, the Prime Minister welcomed Brazil's efforts to reduce inequality, especially for women and children, ensuring social equity and inclusive development during its G20 Presidency year. The Prime Minister emphasized that these are important and prerequisite conditions for sustainable development and energy transition to serve the interests of the people, "leaving no one behind".
Finally , the Prime Minister called for promoting innovative financial cooperation models and effective investment, especially public-private partnership, to unlock, mobilize and effectively use all resources for sustainable development and energy transition.
On this occasion, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also informed the conference that Vietnam will host the Partnership for Green Growth and the Global Goals (P4G) Summit in April 2025. The Prime Minister affirmed that this is Vietnam's effort to contribute to promoting the implementation of sustainable development goals and energy transition. Vietnam's announcement was welcomed and responded to by the Conference.
Under the leadership of the Presidency and efforts to put aside differences, the Conference adopted a Joint Declaration of the Conference emphasizing the message of international solidarity, upholding multilateralism, joining hands in the fight against poverty and promoting sustainable development. At the Closing Ceremony of the Conference, President Lula handed over the ceremonial gavel to President Cyril Raphamosa, officially transferring the G20 Presidency for 2025 to the Republic of South Africa. The theme of the G20 next year is expected to be “Promoting Solidarity, Equality and Sustainable Development.”
The 2024 G20 Summit was a great success, concluding Brazil's Presidency with a highlight of promoting the G20 agenda to continue focusing on the contents of common concern of the countries of the Southern Hemisphere today. Host country Brazil has promoted the adoption of many important initiatives on poverty reduction, global governance, principles for promoting sustainable development, energy planning, biodiversity, etc. In the context of fierce geopolitical competition recently, the fact that the 2024 G20 Summit continues to achieve many important results shows the need for countries to promote multilateralism, international solidarity and coordination to solve common challenges.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh's participation and responsible contribution at the Conference were highly appreciated by G20 countries and guests, demonstrating Vietnam's growing stature, role, prestige and international position in addressing global challenges.
