PARENTS STAY UP ALL NIGHT "WAITING" FOR INFORMATION
Hanoi announced the 10th grade entrance exam scores in the late afternoon. After knowing the scores, many parents had a "sleepless night" with their children's scores "unstable" compared to last year. The "hottest" topic on Hanoi parent groups from the afternoon of June 29 until now is "standard scores", the story of whether their children pass or fail.
Parents in Hanoi were anxiously waiting for their children outside the 10th grade exam room. Now they are anxiously waiting for information on the benchmark scores.
While Ho Chi Minh City announced the score distribution and analyzed the scores of each subject right after announcing the 10th grade entrance exam scores, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training has not made any moves on this matter. When Thanh Nien reporters raised the issue, a leader of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that the analysis of this year's exam scores, if any, would only be carried out and announced after the standard scores were announced because the Department is "too busy" with grading the high school graduation exams.
Ms. TQ, whose child took the entrance exam to Phan Dinh Phung High School, said that compared to the standard score last year, her child was 0.25 points lower. "Heart attack" and "couldn't sleep" were what Ms. Q. shared after learning her child's exam score. She searched all the groups for parents and students in Hanoi to get information on exam score analysis. She asked anyone who said they had score data to predict her child's chances of passing or failing.
"Some parents in the groups did not understand why the Department had the exam score data, so I asked them to see how their child's score ranked among the students who registered for their first choice at the school. From there, they compared it to the quota that the school was assigned this year to make an educated guess," Ms. Q. shared, saying that according to this data, her child had enough points to pass. However, because this is an unofficial information channel, we cannot be assured until the Department of Education and Training announces the standard score.
Hundreds of parents whose children achieved results equal to or slightly lower than last year's benchmark scores all had the same feelings as Ms. Q., on the one hand waiting for news of benchmark scores but on the other hand also consulting the admissions process and quality of non-public schools to have a backup plan.
On the closed group "Accompanying excellent students..." with more than 150,000 members, the group's admin based on the provided exam score data and gave statistics and predictions about this year's benchmark scores. A quick statistic of the 10th grade entrance exam scores in Hanoi provided by this group shows that the total admission score this year may decrease slightly compared to last year. Therefore, it is expected that the average benchmark scores for both specialized and non-specialized programs in most schools will decrease slightly or be the same, not increase.
LITERATURE SCORE INCREASED BUT MATH AND FOREIGN LANGUAGE SCORE DECREASE SLIGHTLY?
According to a leader of Chu Van An Secondary School (Tay Ho District), the general prediction is that the standard score may decrease slightly from 0.25 - 0.5 depending on the school because the literature score increases but the math and foreign language scores tend to decrease.
Similarly, the principal of a secondary school in Dong Da District predicted that this year's benchmark scores would decrease slightly. Based on the test questions and test results of the students they teach, many math and foreign language teachers said that the test scores for these two subjects this year would decrease slightly compared to last year due to better differentiation of the test questions.
Regarding this year's exam, Mr. Tran Manh Tung, a math teacher with many years of experience in training students in Hanoi, said that the average score range is around 7 points. Average students can get 5 - 7 points, good students can get 7 - 8 points, and excellent students can get 8 - 9 points. Therefore, according to Mr. Tung, this year's score range and benchmark scores will not have many significant changes.
The principal of a top school said that the exam scores are the same as last year, but the benchmark scores of top schools will decrease because specialized classes have increased, and most of the good students have taken specialized exams.
Because this year there is no analysis of exam scores from the Department of Education and Training, the basis for parents to predict the benchmark score is only based on the score of last year. In 2023, the benchmark score for entering grade 10 of many schools in Hanoi increased compared to 2022. The school with the highest benchmark score is Chu Van An High School with 44.5 points. The benchmark scores for entering grade 10 of the schools are: Kim Lien High School 43.25 points; Viet Duc High School 43 points; Phan Dinh Phung High School 42.75 points; Le Quy Don High School - Ha Dong and Yen Hoa High School are equal at 42.25 points. In particular, the top 2 schools or newly established schools, schools considered safe backup plans, also increased the competition rate and increased the benchmark score sharply. In 2023, Khuong Ha High School has the highest competition ratio in the city with 1/3.55, the benchmark score is 37.5, 3 points higher than in 2022. Trung Van High School in 2022 took 34.25 points, in 2023 took 37.75 points, an increase of 3.5 points.
Opinions say that the benchmark score each year, in addition to depending on the exam questions and competition ratio, also depends on other factors such as: the quality of students taking the exam each year, the sudden increase or decrease in competition ratio of each school. This year, the competition ratio for high schools in Hanoi does not have many surprising factors, the schools with the highest benchmark scores are still the schools with intense competition, the assigned quotas do not increase or decrease significantly compared to last year. Although some schools are not in the top 10 schools with the highest competition ratio, according to experts, it is the competition of the best students, so the pressure on benchmark scores will not decrease.
Hanoi Department of Education and Training will hold a meeting to review admission scores for specialized and non-specialized high schools on July 1.
PULSE UP THE ANNOUNCEMENT SCHEDULE OF STANDARD SCORE AND ADMISSION TIME
According to the new plan of the Department of Education and Training, the meeting schedule and announcement of Hanoi's benchmark scores have been adjusted because the time to announce the exam scores has been moved up 4 days earlier than expected. Specifically, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training said that it will hold a meeting to review the benchmark scores for admission to grade 10 of specialized and non-specialized high schools on July 1. From July 1 to 4 is the time to announce the benchmark scores of each school. On July 5, secondary schools must complete sending the result notification form to students. Before 11:00 on July 5, high schools will announce the list of admission results to grade 10 at the school.
Students who have enough points to pass the entrance exam need to confirm their admission to the high school they are admitted to. According to the regulations of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, the time to confirm admission online or directly at the high school is from 1:00 p.m. on July 5 to the end of July 7. Students who confirm their admission online on the system need to print out their admission confirmation.
From July 3 to 8, secondary schools will receive applications for re-examination of students' exam scores (if any). On July 10, the Hanoi Department of Education and Training will meet and approve additional benchmark scores for both specialized and non-specialized high schools (if any). From July 12 to 15, students who have passed the additional admission will complete admission procedures. On July 25, the results of the re-examination will be available and then the documents and admission of students after the re-examination (if any) will be processed. This work will end on July 29.
Ho Chi Minh City announced 10th grade benchmark scores on July 3
On June 30, Mr. Le Hoai Nam, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, said that the Department will announce the 10th grade benchmark scores on July 3, about a week earlier than expected.
This year, the 10th grade exam in Ho Chi Minh City had about 98,400 candidates taking the exam on June 6-7. On June 20, the Department of Education and Training announced the 10th grade exam scores and on June 24, announced the 10th grade benchmark scores for specialized and integrated classes.
This year, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training will announce the 10th grade benchmark scores on July 3.

Whether you pass or fail is very important.
parents hand holding
Whether your child passes or fails, whether surprised or shocked, parents need to stay calm to support their children and have a plan to choose the right school for them. This is when children are most confused, needing encouragement, guidance and a handshake from their parents to move forward. Don't let your own expectations not be met and make your children more stressed and self-conscious. Your children's future does not depend on this one exam and their education does not only depend on public high schools or specialized schools, so it is not too difficult to pass or fail to get into a public school.
