Ba Duong Noi village kite festival recognized as national intangible cultural heritage

(PLVN) - This afternoon, April 12, at the Dieu Temple relic, Hong Ha commune, Dan Phuong district, Hanoi, the Ceremony to receive the National Intangible Cultural Heritage "Ba Duong Noi Village Kite Festival" and the Certificate of recognition of the title of Hanoi Traditional Craft "Ba Duong Noi Village Kite Making Craft". The event was jointly organized by the District Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Dan Phuong district.

Attending the ceremony were former Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Do Ba Ty, former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong; Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong.

Ba Duong Noi village (also known as Ba Giang), formerly known as Ke Ba. In the early 19th century, Ba Giang village belonged to Thuong Tri commune, Tu Liem district, Son Tay town; now belongs to Hong Ha commune, Dan Phuong district, Hanoi city. This is an ancient land along the Nhi Ha river (Red river), with alluvial sandbanks and many mounds, piles and dense trees.

The Kite Festival in Ba Duong Noi village has a history of thousands of years. Since ancient times, the people of Ba Duong Noi village have been proficient in making flute kites of all sizes. The unique and outstanding (only) feature of the Ba Duong Noi village Kite Festival is the kite flying competition festival associated with a relic (Kite Temple) worshiping the God of the Delta, which is fully performed according to traditional sacrificial rituals.

The kite flying festival includes main rituals such as: the ceremony of conferring the royal robes and uniforms; the ceremony of uniforms; the ceremony of declaring the royal decree; the ceremony of worshipping the Chief; the kite presentation ceremony; the ceremony of praying for the wind and flying the kite. The kite that wins first prize will be brought to the temple to worship the God of the Delta... The competition takes place over 3 days, from March 14 to 16 of the lunar calendar, in which the main festival is on March 15, the time when a new planting season begins for farmers in ancient times.

The kite flying competition takes place at the Kite Temple, a place to worship the God of the Delta, located in the middle of the agricultural production space of the local farmers. The festival carries the idea of ​​praying for wind with the desire to pray for favorable rain and wind for production and cultivation, hoping for a good harvest and a prosperous life.

The festival also reflects the cultural beliefs of agricultural residents along the Red River - the largest river in the Northern Delta, which has an influence on the entire life of residents in the downstream area, contributing to the formation of the cultural flow and civilization of the Red River.

At the ceremony, Chairman of Dan Phuong District People's Committee Nguyen Van Duc said that receiving the title is an honor and pride for the Party Committee, government and people of Dan Phuong district, especially the people of Ba Duong Noi village, Hong Ha commune.

Proactively applying, creatively and flexibly concretizing the guidelines and policies of the Party and State, resolutions and directives of the city on preserving and promoting the values ​​of cultural heritage, traditional crafts and conditions and practical situations at the grassroots level.

In the coming time, local authorities will continue to research and plan cultural spaces, practice spaces, and experiences of Vietnamese cultural heritage and traditional crafts in Hanoi, aiming to plan Ba ​​Duong Noi village to become one of the "creative cultural spaces" of the capital Hanoi. Build the National Intangible Cultural Heritage "Ba Duong Noi Kite Festival" to become a typical cultural heritage, imbued with the cultural identity of the Vietnamese nation; the traditional craft of making flute kites in Hanoi has a lasting and strong vitality, not only creating jobs and stable income for people in Ba Duong Noi village, Hong Ha commune, but also for households in neighboring areas.

After the Ceremony of receiving the National Intangible Cultural Heritage "Ba Duong Noi Village Kite Festival" and the Certificate of recognition of the title "Hanoi Traditional Craft", Hong Ha commune opened the Traditional Kite Flying Festival.

The qualified kites are numbered and ready to compete.

This year, the Ba Duong Noi village kite festival attracted 72 kites to compete. According to traditional rules, the kites that qualify for the competition must be at least 2.2m long, at least 0.6m wide, have 3 flutes (the flute diameter must be 2.5cm or more), the kites must not be covered with white glossy paper... and are flown in the village fields. The kites with the best flutes, that fly the highest and stand the most still... are the winning kites.

Within the framework of the Ceremony to receive the National Intangible Cultural Heritage “Ba Duong Noi Village Kite Festival”; Certificate of recognition of the title of Hanoi Traditional Craft “Ba Duong Noi Village Kite Making Craft”, in addition to the Traditional Kite Flying Competition at the Kite Temple Relic, there are also other activities such as: Decorating the “Connecting Journey” Kite Road; exhibition area introducing typical craft village products and OCOP products of the Capital; art performances by village clubs; chess competitions, open volleyball, etc.
