Why should we learn for life?
"Why do we study?" - a seemingly simple question that contains profound meanings about the life and future of each person. Every year on October 2, the whole country looks towards a special day - Vietnam Education Promotion Day. This is an opportunity for us to honor the nation's spirit of learning, and at the same time, awaken in each person the awareness of the importance of lifelong learning.
Learning is not only about acquiring knowledge but also about training thinking and shaping personality. In today's era, when knowledge is considered power, learning is not only an option but also an essential need.
Learning helps us broaden our horizons. Access to new knowledge and different cultures helps each person have a more comprehensive view of life and the outside world, while also training thinking, creativity, problem solving, and communication skills to be more confident in life. Moreover, knowledge helps us get a good job, a stable life, and contribute to society.
However, in addition to the achievements, there are still many problems in learning. Some people do not fully understand the importance of learning, leading to dropping out of school or ineffective learning. In addition, facilities and teaching methods in some localities are still limited.
To improve the quality of education and encourage learning, there needs to be synchronous solutions such as strong investment in education, improving the quality of teachers, innovating the curriculum; creating a good learning environment... However, the most important thing is that each person must have the awareness to self-study, constantly improving knowledge and skills.
Vietnam Education Promotion Day is also an opportunity to look back at the achievements that have been made, and at the same time identify the tasks that need to be done in the future. Learning is a long journey, requiring perseverance and constant effort. Learning is not simply going to school but also a continuous process, with no end point. Especially in the current information explosion era, updating knowledge and skills becomes a key factor to help us adapt and develop.
Lifelong learning involves acquiring new knowledge, improving personal skills and developing ourselves through real-life experiences, from lessons in books to life. This not only helps us expand our knowledge but also develops critical thinking, problem-solving and creativity.
In a rapidly changing world, the need for new skills and knowledge is increasing. Old professions may disappear, while new fields emerge that require different skills. Lifelong learning helps us not only stay relevant in the workplace, but also increase our competitiveness. This is especially important in a globalized economy where adaptability and innovation are essential.
It can be said that lifelong learning brings many benefits not only to individuals but also to society. For individuals, it helps improve professional qualifications, expand career opportunities, and create confidence. Continuously learning and updating knowledge also helps improve mental health, creating excitement in daily life. For society, a community of people who are always eager to learn will create sustainable development. When each individual constantly improves themselves, the whole society will develop.

Learning is a never ending journey.
The Industrial Revolution 4.0 has had a profound impact on learning, opening up new opportunities but also posing many challenges. To make the most of the benefits that technology brings, we need to have strong investment in infrastructure, teacher training, and raising community awareness of the importance of lifelong learning.
According to many experts, to promote lifelong learning, a flexible and supportive education system is needed. The state and educational institutions create favorable conditions for people to participate in courses, training programs and knowledge enhancement activities. In addition, the development of online learning platforms will help people easily access rich learning resources.
Family and community also play an important role in encouraging the spirit of learning. Parents should create an environment for their children to explore, discover and accumulate knowledge from many sources. It is possible to organize activities and seminars to share knowledge so that everyone can learn and develop together.
Everyone can start their journey of lifelong learning by reading books, taking courses, or simply learning about a new field that interests them. Joining clubs, study groups, or short courses is also a way to expand knowledge and skills.
In an interview with The World and Vietnam Newspaper, Prof. Dr. Pham Tat Dong, advisor to the Vietnam Association for Promoting Education, said that in the modern world, people's daily work is always changing and requires constant updating of knowledge. That is, we must learn promptly, need the most practical things, so we must update regularly, learn to serve the work.
The VUCA world is constantly emerging, Covid-19 or the appearance of ChatGPT also brings many changes. Therefore, people must have the ability to adapt to complex situations. To live in this world, there must be some basic factors such as creativity, knowledge to deal with problems.
"Open education is barrier-free for learners. If people do not have the conditions to attend classes, they can study online, can study at any time, according to certain content, study at home, study at night... Open education in general opens all aspects to learners and is increasingly cheaper. If we do not study, do not update knowledge continuously, people will be eliminated by artificial intelligence (AI) and high technology. Therefore, we must study continuously, must move towards having the ability to adapt, must be creative and always be proactive when facing unpredictable problems", emphasized Prof. Dr. Pham Tat Dong.
It can be said that Vietnam Education Promotion Day is not only an occasion to honor achievements in education but also a reminder of the importance of lifelong learning. Let's consider learning as a continuous journey. We need to build a learning culture where everyone is encouraged to explore, learn and develop themselves. Lifelong learning is not just an option but an essential requirement in the modern world, where change and development are inevitable.
