As the founder and director of two educational charities in Vietnam, the Humanitarian Bookshelf and the House of Wisdom, Mr. Nguyen Anh Tuan believes that in the context of a constantly changing society, lifelong learning has become an essential factor to help each individual improve their knowledge, expand opportunities and maintain competitiveness.

Learn anytime, anywhere

* What do you think about lifelong learning?

- I think lifelong learning starts with self-study, studying diligently after graduation and updating knowledge every day. Learning is not just for getting a degree. Personally, I consider lifelong learning almost a must or a given.

Because in the context of a rapidly changing society, old knowledge easily becomes obsolete. It is not only in the AI era that we feel it now, but even 10, 20 years ago or even further, the world is still constantly moving every day.

Learning in school is only a small part of what we will need in life. Therefore, we need to learn for life, and learn continuously. Every day, every day, update new knowledge.

The world is moving fast. If you don't change or are just a little lazy, you will fall behind.

* It seems that spreading lifelong learning is also one of the operating principles of the House of Wisdom and the Humanitarian Bookshelf, isn't it, sir?

- We started our operation many years ago, with the mission of spreading the spirit of lifelong learning and popularizing education through self-study and lifelong learning. We believe that everyone can learn anywhere, anytime and learn with anyone. Anyone can be their own teacher. Everyone can be an "educator" - learning, teaching and sharing knowledge with each other.

With the Compassionate Bookshelf, we bring together the love of reading, liberal education, and community in learning. We promote reading in the community and support educational initiatives.

Our bookcases have now been deployed in many localities, bringing learning opportunities to thousands of people. Last Sunday, we, together with a group of Polytechnic alumni, presented more than 1,132 books to primary schools in Lam Dong.

With Wisdom House, we also organize programs such as free classes for children in difficult areas, life skills sharing workshops and online education support projects to help adults continue learning. The classes are diverse in form, content and audience, but they are similar in that they want everyone to be able to continuously acquire a little knowledge for themselves.

Most recently, on March 1, we opened an online course for 86 5th grade students at Nghia Dong Primary School, Tan Ky District, Nghe An, who can study online with volunteer instructors who are two Vietnamese students currently studying high school in the state of Georgia, USA. They can learn English for free online, focusing on communication skills.

We consider this a way to spread, not cost much but still help many students. We think there is no shortage of teachers, only fear of shortage of students. Like a famous saying once said when students want to learn, teachers will appear.

Learning in school is only a small part of what we will need in life. Therefore, we need to learn for life, and learn continuously. Every day, every day, update new knowledge.

There is a teacher for every student.

* In your opinion, how can schools build lifelong learning skills in students?

- In my opinion, schools can encourage lifelong learning by creating an active learning environment where students not only absorb knowledge from teachers but also learn to explore and research on their own. Methods such as project-based learning, debate, and individual research can all help students develop active learning habits.

In addition, schools should also integrate soft skills education programs, such as research skills, critical thinking and time management, so that students can continue to learn effectively even after leaving the school environment.

In addition, students can start with small things like reading books, discussing, participating in online courses. The most important thing is to maintain the habit of learning, not afraid to face new things. Another effective way is to join learning communities, where people can share knowledge and encourage each other to improve.

* How do you practice lifelong learning yourself?

- I always maintain the habit of reading books every day, attending online courses and professional seminars. But I often learn from my friends, teachers and coffee conversations on the street rather than in a formal way. Sometimes, a deep conversation with a very professional friend will help me absorb a lot of valuable and practical knowledge.

For any topic I want to learn, I will learn it myself first. You can search online or through AI. Nowadays, there are many knowledge and questions you can learn with AI, from very academic knowledge to very common things like... washing rice, cooking rice. Just 10 - 15 minutes of talking to AI, you can improve your knowledge about a certain topic.

If the Internet, AI or books still do not satisfy me, I will seek out people who can help me find the answers. I also keep the same mindset as when I built the House of Wisdom and the Compassionate Bookshelf, that as long as you want to learn, a teacher will appear.

If you don't study, you will be left behind.

In particular, parents must also learn to answer their children's questions. Teachers themselves also need to learn throughout their lives. It is clear that in some places, with some subjects such as English, many teachers may have lost to their students. Therefore, teachers will also have to know how to update their knowledge. Otherwise, teachers themselves will be left behind.
