This year's 12th graders will be the first batch of candidates to take the high school graduation exam according to the 2018 general education program. Accordingly, in the 2025 high school graduation exam, candidates will take 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects: literature, mathematics and 2 elective subjects from the remaining subjects studied in grade 12 including foreign languages, history, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, economic and legal education, information technology, and technology. This is also the first exam in which economic and legal education, information technology, and technology are included in the graduation exam system.
This year's 12th graders are the first generation to take the high school graduation exam with 4 subjects, including 2 compulsory subjects and 2 elective subjects.
TRADITIONAL SUBJECTS ARE MAIN
Initial surveys and statistics from high schools in Ho Chi Minh City show that very few students choose to take exams in economics and law, information technology, and technology, but mostly choose traditional subjects. Among them, English, physics, and chemistry are the subjects most chosen by students.
According to the latest update to mid-August from Gia Dinh High School (Binh Thanh District), out of a total of 954 12th grade students, 726 students chose English, followed by physics with 521 students, chemistry with 333 students, biology with 120 students, geography with 33 students, economics and law education with 70 students, history with 80 students and information technology with 25 students.
Similarly, at Tay Thanh High School (Tan Phu District), out of 900 students, 688 chose English, 599 chose physics, 240 chose chemistry, 82 chose history, 51 chose biology, 129 chose geography, 23 chose economic and legal education, and 13 chose information technology. This school had 2 students choosing technology for their graduation exam.
At Duong Van Thi High School (Thu Duc City), English is still the leading subject with 354 students choosing it, followed by physics, chemistry, history, geography, economic and legal education, and biology. There are no students choosing information technology and technology.
Statistics from Nguyen Khuyen High School (District 10) show that out of more than 600 students, 1 student chose computer science and 1 student chose technology. More than 300 students chose English, followed by physics, chemistry, history, etc.
According to initial registration data from Nguyen Huu Huan High School (Thu Duc City), out of 621 students, only 1 student chose to take the technology exam, 2 students chose information technology, and 5 students chose economics and law education.
At Nguyen Huu Cau High School (Hoc Mon District), 5 students chose to take the IT exam, 14 students chose the economic and legal education exam, and no students chose the technology exam.
REASONS WHY FEW STUDENTS CHOOSE THE 3 NEW SUBJECTS
According to Mr. Ho Ngoc Dang Khoa, Vice Principal of Nguyen Huu Cau High School (Hoc Mon District), the 3 new exam subjects are very suitable for the modern economy, important but students have not paid attention. In addition, universities have not yet announced the admission combinations, while the number of exam subjects in 2025 is 2 subjects less than previous years, so students must prioritize choosing subjects that can be considered in many combinations to ensure safety. For example, some students want to enter the IT industry but will choose the combination A00 (math - physics - chemistry) or A01 (math - physics - English) to still be considered for other majors.
Mr. To Lam Vien Khoa, Vice Principal of Gia Dinh High School, commented that the reason why students choose English the most is because this is a subject with many options in university majors. In addition, since grade 10, the school has taught intensive English and English with foreigners to all students, so students are confident in their choices. Next are physics and chemistry, which are subjects in popular combinations when considering university admission.
The low choice of social subjects is also in line with the general trend of the school and the city in recent years. Information technology is a very new subject for the graduation exam, so the number of choices is also very small. Students who choose economic and legal education choose the main subject combination for university admission, which is group D (math, literature, English). Students who choose information technology are those who plan to take the exam for computer science and IT.
Mr. Khoa added: "Through discussions with parents and students about the selection criteria, it is known that students will mainly choose familiar subjects in the university entrance exam subject groups (according to previous years) and subjects that they study well and have the ability to get high scores."
Thanh Nien reporters' records show that initially, most students in Ho Chi Minh City chose traditional subjects. Among them, English, physics, and chemistry are the most chosen subjects.
FOCUS ON SUPPORTING SUBJECTS STUDENTS CHOOSE FOR GRADUATION EXAM
Mr. Ho Ngoc Dang Khoa said that the few students choosing the subject also creates some difficulties in organizing review classes. However, no matter how many students choose, the school still has to teach it to prepare knowledge for students in the best way.
According to the plan of Nguyen Huu Cau High School, in addition to regular classes, students will participate in more review and practice sessions to improve their knowledge and test-taking skills. In the IT subject, students must become familiar with how to use machines and software to approach the exam. "The school still teaches closely following the program, waiting for the sample exam questions from the Ministry of Education and Training. After knowing the structure and orientation of the exam, the school will develop a specific plan, teaching methods, and review in the second semester," Mr. Khoa shared.
Based on the wishes of students, Gia Dinh High School has developed a plan that 100% of grade 12 teachers teaching exam subjects must be trained in the program, trained in using textbooks and trained in how to build graduation questions in 2025. Specifically, Mr. To Lam Vien Khoa said that because in the same class, students can choose different graduation exam subjects, the school organizes the second session as a combined class (except for math and literature). Review sessions are held on Friday afternoons, helping students summarize the content of the week and consolidate and practice the knowledge they have learned.
Director of Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training notes on teaching and learning English
At the conference to deploy tasks for the 2024-2025 school year, referring to the preparation for this year's 12th grade students to participate in the 2025 high school graduation exam, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, emphasized that high schools must pay attention to class arrangement, arrange teachers to teach and organize review and consolidate knowledge for students, ensuring the highest exam results.
Schools must invest right from the beginning of the school year, focusing on supporting students in subjects they choose to take, creating favorable conditions for them to study and complete the exam. The Department of Secondary Education, the Department of Testing and Education Quality Assessment will organize a comparison of graduation exam scores with the entrance scores of students from each school. Through the deviation, the quality of teaching and learning of the schools will be assessed.
Mr. Hieu also added that 2025 is the first year that English is no longer a compulsory subject. However, schools still consider foreign languages a strength and a tool for students to integrate, so teaching and learning English is still carried out seriously and effectively, and should not be subjective.
