This year's 12th-grade students will be the first group of candidates to participate in the high school graduation exam under the 2018 general education program. Accordingly, in the 2025 high school graduation exam, candidates will take four subjects: two compulsory subjects (Vietnamese Literature and Mathematics) and two elective subjects from the remaining subjects studied in 12th grade, including foreign language, history, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, economics and law education, information technology, and technology. This is also the first exam where economics and law education, information technology, and technology are included in the graduation exam subjects.
This year's 12th-grade students are the first group to take the high school graduation exam, with four subjects: two compulsory and two elective.
Traditional competition subjects dominate.
Initial surveys and statistics from high schools in Ho Chi Minh City show that very few students chose to take exams in economics and law, computer science, or technology, while most chose traditional subjects. Among these, English, physics, and chemistry were the most popular choices.
According to the latest update from Gia Dinh High School (Binh Thanh District) in mid-August, out of a total of 954 12th-grade students, 726 chose English, followed by physics with 521 students, chemistry with 333 students, biology with 120 students, geography with 33 students, economics and law education with 70 students, history with 80 students, and computer science with 25 students.
Similarly, at Tay Thanh High School (Tan Phu District), out of 900 students, 688 chose English, 599 chose physics, 240 chose chemistry, 82 chose history, 51 chose biology, 129 chose geography, 23 chose economics and law education, and 13 chose computer science. This school also has 2 students who chose technology as a subject for their graduation exam.
At Duong Van Thi High School (Thu Duc City), English remains the leading subject with 354 students choosing it, followed by physics, chemistry, history, geography, economics and law education, and biology. Informatics and technology had no students choosing them.
Statistics from Nguyen Khuyen High School (District 10) show that out of more than 600 students, 1 student chose computer science, and 1 student chose technology. Over 300 students chose English, followed by physics, chemistry, history, and so on.
According to initial registration data from Nguyen Huu Huan High School (Thu Duc City), out of 621 students, only 1 student chose to take the technology exam, 2 students chose computer science, and 5 students chose economics and law education.
At Nguyen Huu Cau High School (Hoc Mon District), 5 students chose to take the computer science exam, 14 students chose economics and law education, while no students chose technology.
REASONS WHY FEW STUDENTS CHOOSE THE 3 NEW EXAM SUBJECTS
According to Mr. Ho Ngoc Dang Khoa, Vice Principal of Nguyen Huu Cau High School (Hoc Mon District), the three new exam subjects are very suitable for the modern economy and are important, but students haven't paid enough attention to them. Furthermore, universities haven't yet announced the admission combinations, and since the number of exam subjects in 2025 is two fewer than in previous years, students must prioritize subjects that can be included in multiple combinations to ensure safety. For example, some students who want to major in Information Technology might choose the A00 combination (Mathematics - Physics - Chemistry) or A01 combination (Mathematics - Physics - English) to still be considered for other majors.
Mr. To Lam Vien Khoa, Vice Principal of Gia Dinh High School, commented that the reason students choose English the most is because it offers many options in university-level majors. In addition, from grade 10, the school has provided enhanced English instruction and English classes with native speakers for all students, giving them confidence in their choices. Next are physics and chemistry, which are subjects included in common combinations for university entrance exams.
The low number of social science subjects chosen is also in line with the general trend of the school and the city in recent years. Computer science is a very new subject for the high school graduation exam, so the number of students choosing it is also very small. Students who choose economics and law education tend to select the main subject combination for university entrance exams, which is Block D (mathematics, literature, English). Students who choose computer science are those planning to major in computer science or information technology.
Mr. Khoa added: "Through discussions with parents and students about selection criteria, we learned that they will mainly choose familiar subjects in the university entrance exam subject combinations (based on previous years) and subjects in which they excel and have the potential to score high marks."
Reporters from Thanh Nien newspaper observed that initially, most students in Ho Chi Minh City chose traditional exam subjects. Among these, English, physics, and chemistry were the most popular choices.
FOCUS ON SUPPORTING STUDENTS IN THE SUBJECTS THEY CHOOSE FOR THEIR GRADUATION EXAM
Mr. Ho Ngoc Dang Khoa said that subjects with fewer students choosing them also create some difficulties in organizing review classes. However, regardless of how many students choose them, the school still has to teach them to prepare students with the best possible knowledge.
According to the plan of Nguyen Huu Cau High School, in addition to regular classes, students will participate in more review and practice sessions to improve their knowledge and test-taking skills. Specifically for computer science, students must familiarize themselves with using computers and software to prepare for the exam. "The school will continue to teach according to the curriculum, waiting for the sample exam questions from the Ministry of Education and Training. After knowing the structure and direction of the exam, the school will develop a specific plan and teaching methods for review in the second semester," Mr. Khoa shared.
Based on understanding the aspirations of students, Gia Dinh High School has developed a plan to ensure that 100% of 12th-grade teachers teaching subjects included in the graduation exam receive training on the curriculum, textbook usage, and methods for constructing the 2025 graduation exam questions. Specifically, Mr. To Lam Vien Khoa stated that because students in the same class can choose different subjects for the graduation exam, the school organizes the second session in a mixed-grade format (except for mathematics and literature). Review sessions are held on Friday afternoons, helping students summarize the week's learning content and reinforce and practice the knowledge they have learned.
The Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training emphasized the importance of teaching and learning English.
At the conference on implementing tasks for the 2024-2025 school year, regarding the preparation of 12th-grade students for the 2025 high school graduation exam, Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, emphasized that high schools must pay attention to class arrangement, teacher assignment, and organizing review and consolidation of knowledge for students to ensure the highest possible exam results.
Schools must invest from the beginning of the school year, focusing on supporting and facilitating students' learning and exam preparation in subjects chosen by them. The Department of Secondary Education and the Department of Examination and Quality Assurance will compare graduation exam scores with the entrance exam scores of students in each school. The difference will be used to assess the quality of teaching and learning in each school.
Mr. Hieu also added that 2025 will be the first year that English is no longer a compulsory exam subject. However, schools still consider foreign languages a strength and a tool for students to integrate, so the teaching and learning of English will continue seriously and effectively, and should not be taken lightly.
