The first year of the 10th grade exam according to the new program, new regulations and major changes in review and extra teaching, but until now, Hanoi students still do not know the 10th grade admission plan.
THE THIRD SUBJECT IS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE
Up to this point, nearly 20 provinces and cities have announced the subjects for the 10th grade entrance exam. According to records, no locality has randomly selected a third subject, but has designated a foreign language, more specifically English. Meanwhile, Hanoi, which has the largest number of candidates taking the 10th grade entrance exam in the country and is also among the top in terms of competition, has yet to announce any plans for the next school year's enrollment.
A 9th grade student at Thanh Xuan Secondary School (Thanh Xuan District) said: "Reading the information in the press in many localities announcing the third exam subject is a foreign language, we are very worried. We don't understand why Hanoi has not announced it yet. The recent Tet holiday was a very worrying Tet for me and my family when we did not know what the 10th grade entrance exam would be like, what the review plan would be...".
On groups and forums for parents, many people share their feelings of being on edge because they do not know the plan for the 10th grade entrance exam in Hanoi.
Ms. Nguyen Thu Huong, Principal of Nguyen Du Secondary School (Hoan Kiem District), said that students, teachers and parents with children in grade 9 this year are all very worried and anxious, wanting to know about the third exam subject so they can prepare more carefully because this year is the first year of the 10th grade entrance exam with many changes.
According to Ms. Huong, most opinions hope that Hanoi will choose a third subject as a foreign language like other provinces and cities; students are also most worried if they take the integrated natural science subject because this is a very new subject.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong Thuy, Principal of Tan Tien Secondary School (Chuong My District), reflected that through understanding the feelings of students and parents in the school, most of them hope that the third subject will be English or an independent subject. If the city chooses the third subject to be a combination subject, it needs to be announced soon so that parents and students can feel secure and focus more on the subjects.
From 2021 to present, Hanoi City has maintained a stable entrance exam method for grade 10 public high schools with 3 subjects: math, literature and foreign language. Therefore, the general expectation is that the exam will remain stable because the quality of grade 10 entrance in Hanoi has long been highly appreciated.
Because the third exam subject has not been announced, students and parents in Hanoi have heard many rumors, causing unnecessary confusion and tension. Specifically, at the end of January, social networks spread information that the Hanoi Department of Education and Training had just met and decided that the third exam subject in the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year would be a combination of natural sciences. Many parents are worried because if this plan is correct, students will have to study a lot, causing unnecessary pressure, while they are the first generation of students taking the exam under the new program, and the quality of teaching integrated subjects is also very limited.
Later, to reassure public opinion, the leader of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training confirmed that the above information was incorrect. At this time, the Department of Education and Training has not announced the third exam subject. However, in response to the question of when it will be announced, the Department guided the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, stating that the announcement date for the third exam subject "will be no later than March 31 every year".
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education and Training has sent a document to the Departments of Education and Training requesting: "The Departments of Education and Training urgently organize the selection and early announcement of the third subject or exam according to regulations to facilitate students in studying, completing the program and reviewing, preparing well for the conditions, creating a mentality of readiness to take the exam and achieving good results."
HOW TO SOLVE WHEN STOPPING TUTORING DURING EXAM REVIEW PERIOD
Notably, the time for the final exam review is when the new regulations on extra tutoring come into effect, schools are not allowed to collect money for second-session tutoring or 10th-grade exam review sessions from students. Therefore, each school is making appropriate calculations.
Ms. Nguyen Thu Huong said that since the beginning of February, all second-session classes as well as review classes for 9th graders have been temporarily suspended by the school. The school still ensures that the main curriculum is taught correctly and fully according to plan. The 9th graders' class schedule is built with 1 session/day so that in the second session, students and parents can take the initiative in self-studying, self-reviewing or attending classes at the center, serving different needs for the 10th grade entrance exam review.
However, Ms. Huong also said that when the Hanoi Department of Education and Training announces the third exam subject, the school will have a plan to review all three subjects for free for students if they need it. "We will calculate to be able to deduct a portion of the regular expenditure fund to pay teachers according to the regulation on overtime teaching to have a little extra income for teachers," Ms. Huong shared.
Ms. Phan Thi Thuc Hanh, Principal of Phuong Mai Secondary School, Dong Da District, said that reviewing and consolidating knowledge for 9th grade students is done in parallel with regular school hours. Every month, the school tests and surveys 9th grade students. From there, students will determine their current abilities and have a review plan so that they are not passive when they know the exam subjects.
Many parents in Ha Dong District also said they received a notice from the school since the end of January about stopping all second-session classes and studying at school. This means that students who want to review for the 10th grade entrance exam will have to find a center outside the school. Parents received this information with many different feelings.
Ms. HM, a parent whose child attends Chu Van An Secondary School (Tay Ho District), said that the quality of the school's teachers is reputable, so for a long time her children have been taking extra classes at the school every other day, saving both money and time for transportation. Now, if they have to stop taking extra classes at the school, parents will have to look for centers outside, which is very passive and difficult to get into reputable centers because these classes have started since last year or at least since the beginning of the school year.
However, many parents are relieved because for a long time, they had to let their children take extra classes at school to "please" the teachers, and at the same time, they had to let their children take extra classes in really good teachers' classes to prepare for exams with quality, so students had to study up to 3 shifts, which was very hard and expensive... "When extra classes in schools no longer exist, we hope that teachers will focus on teaching the main curriculum, not cutting down on knowledge to teach extra classes, and students will also have time to study extra classes according to their real needs, not just because they are afraid of teachers," a parent in Dai Kim urban area (Hoang Mai district) shared.
In response to parents' concerns about whether the suspension of exam review classes in schools would result in a decline in results, Mr. Nguyen Xuan Thanh, Director of the Department of Secondary Education (Ministry of Education and Training), once clearly stated that the current requirements for test questions and exam assessments must follow the general requirements of the program.
Mr. Thanh added: "When it is a national regulation, localities must implement it equally and fairly and do not need to worry too much, put too much emphasis on the issue and then arrange classes for students to practice for the exam in the morning, noon, afternoon, and evening. We need to overcome the situation where students go to school every day with a packed schedule from morning to night, without time to rest, self-study, absorb, and apply knowledge...".
How is the admission to grade 6 of a special school?
Hanoi has many public (high-quality) and private schools that have long organized capacity assessment tests to enroll students in grade 6. The new regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training do not stipulate this, so many high-quality public schools are still waiting for instructions from the Hanoi Department of Education and Training before they can develop an enrollment plan. However, private secondary schools with high competition rates have announced their enrollment plans and times early. Some schools have even completed their first enrollment rounds without waiting for the general plan.
