At the program to accompany and support students before the difficult 10th grade entrance exam recently held at Tran Duy Hung Secondary School, Nguyen Minh Phuc, a 9th grade student at Hanoi Star Secondary School, shared that sometimes he feels confused because he does not know which high school to set his goals and aspirations to enter to be certain.
Setting a slightly higher goal is a fear of failing, but choosing a school with a low admission score is also a hesitation.

Before registering their wishes, Dong Da Secondary School (Hanoi) held a meeting with parents, disseminated new points of this year's exam, answered questions, and advised students on how to choose a high school to increase their chances of admission. |
In addition, I also shared my concerns about the amount of knowledge to review and the pressure from the exam. Focusing on reviewing a large amount of knowledge in the time before the exam makes students feel overloaded and stressed.
“Every day I study theory, do exercises, and practice questions, but sometimes I feel like I'm not making any progress,” said Tran Hong Ngan, class 9A4, Khuong Mai Secondary School.
Based on their own experiences, members who are students from 55 specialized and non-specialized high schools in Hanoi organized a program to share, advise on the path as well as encourage students to be confident in their choices.
After listening to this year's 9th graders share their concerns and worries about how to study and how to set effective wishes, students from specialized and non-specialized high schools advised that choosing wishes is based on 3 factors: Ability, interest, and distance from home to school. Once the goal is determined, students build a reasonable learning path and effective learning methods so that they can reach their dream school.
It is determined that this year's 10th grade entrance exam is still highly competitive, with only about 64% of students being admitted to public high schools, with top schools having very high admission scores. Students need to base on the admission scores of 2-3 consecutive years to compare with the tests and assessments of their abilities at school and class to make appropriate choices.
Don't leave parents alone
Ms. Dao Thi Hong Hanh, Principal of Dong Da Secondary School (Hanoi) said that, before the 10th grade entrance exam, to relieve students' anxiety, the school's parents invited principals of more than 10 public and private high schools and representatives of vocational colleges to directly share and answer questions from parents and students.

Grade 9 students of Dong Da Secondary School (Hanoi) participated in a school and career counseling day organized by the school. |
At the program, high school principals and vocational school representatives provided full information on enrollment, curriculum, and career orientation, helping students have a clearer view of their options after secondary school.
Parents continuously asked the school's Board of Directors about new points, especially this year is the first year Hanoi does not multiply the coefficient of Math and Literature scores, how will it affect the benchmark scores as well as the difference between the first, second and third choices.

High schools came to middle schools to introduce the schools, benchmark scores of each year as well as the 2018 general education program. |
According to the Principal of Dong Da Secondary School, some parents asked a “difficult question” about whether the competition rate for admission to public high schools this year is high. However, at this time, the question cannot be answered because after announcing the enrollment quota, high schools must base on the number of students registering their wishes to calculate the competition rate.
Some parents also asked if they fail the specialized high school entrance exam, will they be considered for the regular high school entrance exam? The school board explained that the registration of admission to specialized high schools and non-specialized public high schools is considered independently. Students who fail the specialized high school entrance exam will still be considered for grade 10 at non-specialized public schools according to their registered admission.
Parents should note that cases that do not need to follow the admission area include: Students who only register one wish to attend a non-specialized public high school; students who register to attend a specialized school; wish to study Japanese as a first foreign language at Kim Lien High School; Japanese, German at Viet Duc High School; students who register to attend gifted sports high schools, non-public schools, vocational schools, etc.
Ms. Le Kim Anh, Principal of Tran Duy Hung Secondary School, shared that in order for students to be confident in the 10th grade entrance exam, in addition to the teaching plan and knowledge review, the accompanying, consulting and orientation of teachers during the "golden" period also plays a very important role.
The school invited teachers who are principals of junior high and high schools to share information about the new points of this year's exam, how to choose a suitable high school, and increase the chance of admission. With the spirit of teachers "dialogue - listening and solving the root cause" of worries, parents and final year students seem to have somewhat less pressure and feel more secure about the exam.
According to the Hanoi Department of Education and Training, in the 2024-2025 school year, about 127,000 students will graduate from junior high school. Next school year, 122 public and self-financed public schools will enroll nearly 80,000 students (an increase of nearly 5,000 students compared to last year).
The leader of the Hanoi Department of Education and Training shared that with the number of students taking the exam each year reaching more than 100,000, improving school and classroom facilities at the high school level is always a concern.
In addition to investing in building new schools, last year, schools increased repairs and built more units and classrooms to increase enrollment targets and reduce pressure on students.
